Why Smoking is Hazardous
Essay written by Ren M.Chu
Hi I’m here today to tell you the dangers of smoking. Smoking is one of the most preventable causes of death in our society. About one in five deaths in the US are results from using tobacco. About half all of smokers between of 35 and 69 die ahead of time the new smokers replace them. Smokers could be losing an average of 20 to 25 years of their life. Sometime I’m around an adult that smokes and when he smokes, it makes the house smell awful. I have many reasons to why I think this. It gives you aliment, shortens your life, can affect others around you and yourself. Every time you smoke, it’s like cutting 5 minutes of your life and there are many ways to quit. About 430,000 people in the US die every year from smoking related problems...
One of the most hazardous habits to our health is smoking. I am a none smoker and have always been a none smoker. I take a lot of precautionary steps to keep it this way and will continue doing so. But before I talk about how I keep myself from falling into this habit, lets talk about the negative impact smoking can have on someones health. As stated in the textbook, “If nobody smoked, 1 out of every 3 cancer deaths in the United States would not happen.”(pg239) Smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer. It also increases risk of many other cancers including larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, sinuses, cervix, pancreas, liver, and kidney. About 25 to 40 years after smoking rates began to increase for men, lung cancer started a steep rise. About 25-40 years after cigarette consumption decreased for men, lung cancer death rates for men began to drop (pg239). Now lets talk about how I prevent myself from smoking. There are many precautionary steps I or anyone can take. The biggest is to avoid the situation. To avoid picking up smoking I try to stay clear of smokers. If one of my friends happens to be a smoker ...
Many believe that vaping is not harmful to your health but recent findings prove otherwise. I believe that vaping actually is harmful to the body of the vapor as opposed to popular belief that there are no health side-effects. Vaping is extremely harmful to the lungs and heart of the vaper.
Did you know that in 2011 there were more than 6 million tobacco caused deaths worldwide (Henningfield)? Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. Because there is nicotine in cigarettes, they are highly addictive. Cigarettes are one of the worlds most devastating causes of death and disease (Henningfield). There are many negative effects from secondhand smoking, both immediately and over time. Smoking also affects the environment indoors negatively. Also, when pregnant woman or parents of young children smoke, they could harm their children. People should not smoke with others around because they are exposed to harmful chemicals and they are not the one putting themselves in danger.
...her” (Unknown). Smoking is harmful and shouldn’t even have begun with in the first place. To put a single thought about all the bad things that smoking can lead to isn’t hard. Smoking should never even cross the brain. It is crazy how many people just do it so they can “fit in.” That shouldn’t be an excuse to get lung disease, or to ruin cells in the brain. Do not put the harm of others into your hands. Just ask yourself if you can handle the guilt of knowing that someone who doesn’t smoke has “smoker’s lungs” because they have been around someone who smokes. There are so many people today that die, because they have smoked all their life, or even died from secondhand smoke because their parents or spouse have smoked in front of them. So think twice before lighting a cigarette and taking the first puff, think about what all can happen to the body, once addicted.
Even though smoking cigarettes can lead to death and consider very bad for someone’s health, people all over the world do it every day. No matter how many cautions cigarette companies place on cigarettes packs, people still smoke. There have been a lot of debate about the consequences of smoking cigarettes, as well as many studies have been done, showing the awful results of smoking on people’s physical condition. Despite all the consequences that smoking cigarettes can create on one’s health, people cannot seem to be able to stay away from them. At every gas station, almost everywhere people go, many advertisements try to influence people to smoke and make smoking looks cool. However, the smoke from cigarettes has life threatening chemicals in them which trigger to severe effects on people’s healthiness. Smoking can damage nearly every organ of the body and also causes nearly one of every five deaths in the United States each year.
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Every year cigarette smoking is responsible for 500,000 premature deaths (Nugel), you do not want to be just another statistic, do you? America’s first cash crop was tobacco. That means that tobacco has been around for a really long time. It was not until 1865, though, that cigarettes were sold commercially. They were sold to soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Dowshen). From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
Smoking - one of the most harmful addictions, is a social problem of society, both for its smoking and non-smoking section. For the first part of the problem it is to quit smoking, for the second - to avoid the influence of smoking society and not "catch" their habit, as well as - to protect their health from smoking products. It's no secret that smoking is harmful to health, however, every day about 15 billion cigarettes are smoked.
Don't smoke! Do you or anyone you care about smoke cigarettes? Smoking has a lot of effects on your body, your health, and the people around you. Smoking has a lot of short term and long term effects, and the expenses of smoking is a lot more than you think. There are more than 480,000 deaths per year in the U.S. Caused by smoking cigarettes.
Benny Hill once said, “One thousand Americans quit smoking a day by dying.” Smoking is bad for you; annually 440,000 americans die from smoking-related deaths. The tobacco in cigarettes has 4,000 chemicals that are harmful to humans. Smoking is also linked to several different types of cancer. Smoking is extremely addictive. It is one of the worst things a person can do; smoking is just horrible.
Each year, more than 30,000 people die of lung cancer and 4 out of 5 of them will get it because of cigarette smoke. Studies have proven that there is no safe way to smoke. Tobacco contains many dangerous cancer-causing chemicals that affect the lungs of the smoker and the nonsmoker, so smoking just a small amount can increase your chances of getting lung cancer. The Surgeon General has said that "smoking is the single most important cause of death in our society, and it is responsible for more than one out of every five deaths in the United States." The purpose of this report is to inform and educate the reader about smoking and why it is considered the biggest cause of lung cancer. This subject is near and dear to me because my grandfather, who was once a heavy smoker, is now fighting this awful disease.
One of the biggest problems that people are faced with on a day-to-day basis is cigarette smoke. The sole cause for 480,000 deaths each year just in the United States is accredit to cigarettes(CDC). For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable. Some smoke to appeal to their peers or simply because it “feels good.” Smoking one cigarette can lead to a major addiction. The effects of smoking hurt oneself and those amongst us. Smoking Kills as the ad portrays this revolver and cigarettes as the bullets, and also lists the side effects of smoking. Cigarettes causes cancer, increases the risk of you getting a stroke, highly addictive and causes a lot of health problems. Nearly 16
Smoking is one of the dangerous habits that people perform in their lives. This habit affects the health and causes several diseases, such as lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary disease (Institute of Medicine, 2012). In the family I visited, the father is a smoker. He strongly approves with the idea of smoking while the mother strongly disapproves the idea of smoking. Both of them know that smoking is harmful to the smoker, but the father does not know that smoking is harmful for other people who are called: second hand smokers. In addition, the father was at the age of 15 when he started smoking cigarettes. There is more than one reason that pushed the father to start smoking when he was a teenager. One of these reasons is copying the behavior of his father. He believes it would be difficult for him to give up smoking. I agree that quit of smoking is difficult since cigarettes contain nicotine, which is more addictive than heroin and also smoking becomes part of his daily routine (Giovanni, 2012).
Scientists and health officials have been arguing the detrimental effects smoking has on our health for many years. Smoking can lead to serious complications including asthma, pancreas, lung and stomach cancer due to the large number of carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) and other various substances added to it. It is a health hazard for both smokers and non-smokers and it is especially harmful to unborn babies. Although smokers claim that it helps them to relax and release stress, the negative aspects of the habit take over the positive. As it has been stressed by the scientists and experts, there are some very severe reasons of smoking but its crucial consequences should also be taken into consideration.
