What is the point in harming yourself and others just because you like to smoke? It is an addiction you can stop, but you just have to choose to stop. Cigarettes are responsible for thousands of deaths and smoking related diseases in the United States. Cigarettes don’t just affect you for a little bit it affects your whole life once you start. Cigarettes are something you may have to battle your whole life if you are addicted, it’s a mental and physical battle. Cigarettes should be illegal because cigarettes not only affect the smoker; cigarettes affect everyone around them too. I feel so strongly about making smoking cigarettes illegal because my grandfather died when I was young from lung cancer as a result from smoking cigarettes, and seeing someone I love suffer like that isn’t fair and is something that should not happen. Smoking cigarettes affects both smokers and nonsmokers.
Smoking cigarettes has long term and short term effects on your body, both mental and physical. One of the short term effects of smoking cigarettes is addiction. The addiction for smoking cigarettes can develop quickly in kids who started smoking at a young age. The person starts to have cravings associated with smoking cigarettes if they continue smoking for more than a week. Smoking cigarettes also has a short term effect on the brain, it increases stress and alters brain chemistry. Most people start smoking to help with relaxation and relieving stress, but this is not the case because smoking actually increases the stress level of a person. Altering brain chemistry is an immediate effect of smoking. To quit smoking, find ways to cope with stress other than smoking, get support from family and friends, avoid triggers linked to smoking, be prepared for withdrawal symptoms, and talk to therapists. There are also nicotine replacement therapy and medicines (Mental Health Foundation).
There are so many terrible effects that come with smoking cigarettes. There is nothing good that comes out of smoking cigarettes. I think because I saw the effect my grandfather’s death had on my family and how much the people in my family suffered I don’t want people going through that. I don’t want people suffering from something that you can chose to stop. Stopping this addiction is a mental and physical challenge but with the help of family, friends, and a therapist it’s an addiction you can put an end to.
