Cigarette smoking not only affects the smoker, but the others around the smoker as well. Many harmful substances are used as ingredients in cigarettes that have been known to cause many diseases. The harmful substances found in an electronic cigarette are passed on to the fetus through the umbilical cord. Babies whose mothers have smoked electronic cigarettes have been born with nicotine addictions, and some go through withdrawal periods. During fetal development, electronic cigarettes have been known to reduce oxygen flow, raise blood pressure, and constrict the blood vessels, which will decrease the level of nutrients that the fetus receives. The gestation period is often shortened due to nicotine from electric cigarettes, resulting in premature birth and under development. Low birth weights and fetal injuries are a result of many chemicals found in electronic cigarettes.
