Did you know that in the US the effects of smoking cause more deaths than HIV, illegal drugs, alcohol, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined? Have you had someone in your family who has suffered or died from the effects of smoking. I know I have, and the previous fact makes those deaths all the more tragic when you realize how preventable the deadly illnesses that result from smoking really are. Avoiding smoking entirely, can literally be the difference between life and death. The detrimental effects of smoking to your health, the carcinogenic materials in cigarettes and that comprise the smoke byproduct, and the surprising negative impact on one’s appearance are compelling reasons to never engage in smoking. Most people don’t realize how many poisons, toxic metals, and even radioactive material that are in and/or come from cigarettes and the cigarette smoke byproduct. For example, arsenic, found in rat poison, and the highly addictive, nicotine, are active ingredients in cigarettes along with its primary ingredient, tobacco. Both nicotine and arsenic are found in pesticides used in tobacco farming. The tar in cigarettes coats the lungs and disables the cilia in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Over time, some of these damaged cells become cancerous making smoking a leading factor to lung diseases. While the ingredients of cigarettes are harmful, the cigarette smoke byproduct might be even worse. Carbon Monoxide, also found in car exhaust, is known to be life-threatening in sizable amounts. Cigarette smoke contains high levels of this gas. Hydrogen Cyanide, used to execute people in gas chambers during World War II, is another poisonous byproduct of cigarette smoke. Before issuing these warnings, people understandably were not fully aware of the dangers of smoking. Now that these warnings are in place, any reason to smoke should be viewed as an assault to the person, since even vanity excuse has been eliminated as illogical and impractical by even superficial people. Negative effects of smoking go even beyond health to one’s appearance. Mid 20th century, this activity that was once considered popular and even classy has now been proven to be quite deadly and painfully so, as the diseases caused by smoking often linger, causing a painful death. Now that we know the full effects of smoking it is simply a foolish and destructive choice to make for one’s body
Smoking Smoking is an addicting habit on the rise worldwide. Smoking across the globe has many different forms from cigarettes and cigars to pipes and shisha’s. There are many different reasons for smoking whether it is for medicinal reasons or recreational use. Smoking has been around for a very long time and in this essay I will discuss the origins of smoking, the serious health risks, economical burdens, the addicting materials as well smoking among teenagers. Despite efforts from governments and organizations to bring awareness to people across the globe of the serious dangers and implications of smoking, the number of smokers worldwide generally remains on the rise. Brief History Of Smoking Smoking in one form dates back to as early as 5000 BC. It was used in shamanistic rituals to allow the users to achieve a state of trance and connect with the spirit world. Cannabis smoking quickly spread through Africa and the Middle East almost 3000 years ago. Smoking was sighted in England as far back as 1556 and then spread to France in 1560. Tobacco was then brought into Africa by French traders in the early 1600’s. Tobacco at that time was chewed or smoked. Around that time many religious leaders banned smoking and considered it immoral and even blasphemous. The first machine made to produce cigarettes was made by James Bonsack in 1881 after the civil war. The negative effects of smoking were brought to public attention in 1929 by the paper published linking cancer and smoking. During the Great Depression and in Nazi Germany, Hitler viewed smoking as unnecessary and a waste of money and also that woman who smoked as unsuitable to be mothers and wives. After the Second World War, anti-smoking groups lost popularity and smoking increas...
Every American needs to stop and evaluate the risks that come along with smoking cigarettes and why American’s as a whole should drop this bad habit. According to Xin Xu, from Center for Disease Control and Prevention (COD), “Smoking kills about 480,000 American’s each year and remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.” The cost of a pack of cigarettes range from 5.25 to 12.85; therefore, over 20 years, if a person smokes a pack a day, it cost about 38,000 dollars to smoke cigarettes. One’s appearance will diminish over time. Research shows that a smoker’s life expectancy is 10 years shorter than a nonsmoker. No matter what age someone is, it is never too late to stop smoking. American’s need to drop the bad habit of smoking because of the cost and also, the effect of one’s appearance, health, and future.
Smoking is a major killer in this country. It contributes to the premature deaths of up to two million Americans each year, and chronic diseases in millions more. Tobacco is both toxic and addictive. The nicotine in tobacco is five to ten times more addictive than cocaine and a thousand times more powerful than alcohol in altering the mood and behavior. It is classified as a euphoriant drug, because of its ability to alleviate anxiety and boredom. The tar in cigarettes destroys the sacs in the lung where air exchange takes place, and causes a build up of mucus. ...
Some of the chemicals found in cigarettes are Acetone, which is found in nail polish remover and Acetic Acid, an ingredient in hair dye. A common household cleaner called ammonia is found in tobacco cigarettes. Arsenic used in rat poison, is used in tobacco products also. Benzene which is found in rubber cement and Butane which is used in lighter fluid is found in cigarettes as well. An active component in battery acid called Cadmium and carbon monoxide are also chemicals found in cigarettes. Formaldehyde, hexamine and lead are chemicals present in cigarettes. A main ingredient in rocket fuel called methanol and tar which is a material for paving roads, are also a few of the deadly chemicals that tobacco cigarettes contain. (What's in a Cigarette? American Lung Association)
A cigarette holds 599 additives and over 4000 chemicals in it that can cause cancer and even death. It contains; Nicotine, Cadmium (Battery Acid), lighter fluid, sewer gas, candle wax, paint, toilet cleaner, nail polish remover, rocket fuel, and carbon monoxide Etc. (www.cdc.gov/chronicdisease/resources/ publications/aag/osh.htm). These are only 10 things in a cigarette out of 599. Just imagine what other kinds of toxins a cigarette has in it.
Smoking is a habit that has taken place for a longer time than one could think or imagine; the probability that the habit will stop any time soon is also extremely low. Most tobacco users believe cigarette smoking is way of clearing their psychological problems and relaxing their bodies. On the other hand, nonsmokers maintain that the allegations by tobacco users regarding the benefits of smoking are unreal perceptions, which are just in their minds; nonsmokers argue that the habit poses serious health risks to both smokers and the people around them. In this regard, most countries have enacted strict laws to help reduce or completely do away with smoking, as several research studies have pointed out that smoking causes heart diseases, lung complications, and other health issues. To support the move to fight smoking as a result of the health risks it poses to smokers and non-smokers, people should agree to the nationwide indoor smoking ban.
Intro- Hello everyone, if you don’t already know, my name is Greg Mrowka, and I’m here to talk to you about the silent killer, smoking. My goal in telling you about smoking is that you yourselves will not one day become a casualty in the war on smoking. I myself am already in the numbers as one of the addicted, potential casualties. From experience, and through witnessing many deaths on behalf of smoking I believe I am well qualified on telling you about this subject.
Contrary to what tobacco companies want people to believe, smoking does lead to hazardous heath.
Smoking is a simple process of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning tobacco, but it has deadly consequences. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is the most preventable cause of death in America today (Encarta, 2002). Until the 1940?s, smoking was considered harmless. It was at this time that epidemiologists noticed a dramatic increase in the cases of lung cancer. A study was then conducted between smokers and nonsmokers to determine if cigarettes were the cause of this increase. This study, conducted by the American Cancer Society, found increased mortality among smokers. Yet it was not until 1964 that the Surgeon General put out a report acknowledging the danger of cigarettes. The first action to curb smoking was the mandate of a warning on cigarette packages by the Federal Trade Commission (Encarta, 2002). In 1971, all cigarette advertising was banned from radio and television, and cities and states passed laws requiring nonsmoking sections in public places and workplaces (Encarta, 2002). Now in some cities smoking is being completely banned from public places and workplaces and various people are striving for more of these laws against smoking.
Tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats that the world has ever faced and is killing millions of people each year. These deaths are the result of people choosing to smoke regularly the carcinogenic substances found in cigarettes. However many believe that cigarette smoking offers health benefits and thus it should not be banned. But a close examination of the issue proves that tobacco smoke is more dangerous than any other drug. Smokers have a lower life expectancy due to the high risk of developing serious diseases, such as lung cancer and heart disease. People who choose to smoke not only effect their own health but also the health of non-smokers around them. In fact, debates and calls to permanently ban cigarette smoking in public places such as restaurants, public transportation and stores, continue to this day. According to a study published by the American Cancer Society, “Nicotine found in cigarette smoke is as addictive and deadly as heroin or cocaine” (1). Cigarette smoking should be banned because it causes
Studies have proven that there is no safe way to smoke. Tobacco contains many dangerous cancer causing chemicals that affects the lungs of the smoker and the nonsmoker, so smoking just a little amount can increase your chances of getting lung cancer. The Surgeon General has said that "smoking is the single most important cause of death in our society, and it is responsible for more than one out of every five deaths in the United States." The purpose of this report is to inform and educate the reader about smoking and why it is considered the biggest cause of lung cancer. This subject is near and dear to me because my grandfather, who was once a heavy smoker, is now fighting this awful disease. The only way to protect yourself against this killer disease is to never start smoking or to stop smoking if you are a smoker.

The smoke from a burning cigarette is a mixture of hot gasses and different sized particles that fills the air with over 4000 chemicals, including 43 carcinogens and over 400 other toxins (Glantz & Daynard, 1991). One of the gasses emitted by cigarette is carbon monoxide, a colorless and orderless poison. By attaching to hemoglobin, the carbon monoxide lessens the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.
When I ask my dad why he started smoking he would say to be cool. Millions of people started smoking not knowing what would happen to them in years later. Most smokers like my dad have tried to stop but have failed. There are lots of side effects besides smelling bad. If you have children there is a potential to pass second hand smoking that may lead to the same diseases has the smoker can contracted. Most smokers don’t even know the makeup of a cigarette and what those chemical can do to you. Nicotine is an insecticide and interferes with the nervous systems. When a smoker smokes the nicotine, it reaches the brain faster about 7 seconds. This stimulates cells in the brain and blocks the nerve impulses. This is where the addiction happens not with tobacco with nicotine. “Nicotine also causes accelerated heart rate, but at the same time it leads to contracting and hardening of the arteries.”(Tabaco Stop Center)
If people do not want to be those 400,000 people who die from lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart attack, and others, then they should stop smoking cigarettes or never smoke. Moreover, if people do not want their family members or friends die because of smoking air, they should stop smoking. Not only because of those reasons, if people refer to the expensive price of cigarettes and medicine, they should quit smoking because it is not worth it. It is never too late to improve smokers’ health by quitting cigarettes. Stop smoking can help people live longer and healthier. When smokers quit smoking, the rate of decline in lung function will
