Sleeping Disorders: The Impact of Stress and Medical Conditions

Sleeping disorders are a very common thing that people face every day. A sleeping disorder is when a person is unable to sleep or unable to stay asleep when they have the chance to do so. There are many things that impact a person through out the day, causing sleeping disorders but the two most common are stress and medical problems. Stress is so common in adults and college students preventing them from being able to fall asleep and getting the right amount of sleep they need each night. Medical problems such as sleep apnea and night terrors also do the same thing and are not curable. This is not good because many people cannot perform a normal day without the right amount of sleep the night before. Stress is the biggest factor for sleeping disorders. A lot of students have trouble sleeping at night because of stress. Their workload, financial worries, and self-esteem give them stress through out the day keeping them up at night when they are trying to sleep. In a study done by Chen, Lee, Rogers, and Wuertz (2013), 103 female college students sleeping patterns were studied in relation to stress. It was found that most of them experienced three nights with bad sleep a week and 68% of them were classified as insomniacs (p. 854). Since stress and sleep apnea are reasons behind sleep terrors, all three of them have similar affects such as daytime tiredness preventing the child from being fully alert during school, and other activities they participate in (“Sleep Terrors,” 2014). There is not a cure for night terrors but things that can be done to reduce them. Making sure the person goes to sleep stress-free will make the night terrors happen less while the person is sleeping.
