Sleep is very important for many reasons, but many people in the world suffer from sleep disorders. This allows very little sleep to happen, even for several days at a time. I know when I do not get enough sleep, I am always extremely tired, occasionally not being able to do day to day activities. Not getting enough sleep can affect how people perform on a daily basis, especially when it comes to driving a vehicle, doing school work, and even work. One of the most common and devastating sleep disorders in the world is Insomnia, to which people can go without sleep for days. How can a person survive without sleep for days? Fortunately for people who suffer from this, there are some solutions they can take. According to Stanford Healthcare, the Stanford Sleep Center physicians say they have many different treatments they can use to resolve Insomnia, one of them being medication. There are several different medications out there right now that can help improve people’s irregular sleeping patterns. There are types of sleep medications called benzodiazepines, which are older more reliable medications that are permitted to be used by the FDA to help treat Insomnia (“Biological Factors”, 2015). It is generally understood that getting enough sleep plays an important factor as people go through their day to day lives, nevertheless many people do not rank sleep as one of their top priorities. In many cases, people prefer to use the time spent on getting the proper amount of sleep on other activities such as finishing a report for work or doing some last minute studying for a midterm. However, reducing the amount of sleep one gets not only affects one’s academic performance, but their physical health as well.
Sleep is one of our basic needs to survive and to function in day to day operations, but not everyone needs the same amount of sleep. Some people can survive on very little sleep, i.e. five hours a night, and some people need a lot of sleep, to the extend that they are sleeping up to 10 to sometimes 15 hours a night (Nature, 2005). According to Wilson (2005) the general rule states that most people need from seven to eight hours of sleep. The deprivation of sleep in our society in continually increasing with the demands in society increasing work loads, the myth that a few hours of sleep is only necessary to function properly and that sleep is sometimes considered as killing time (Nature, 2005). Sometimes sleep deprivation is also caused by other situations like sleep disorders, i.e. sleep apnea, chronic insomnia or medical conditions such as stress (Wilson, 2005).
Insomnia can be detrimental to the physical and mental health of an individual. Sleep problems can be treated through operational conditioning techniques such as extinction, (Cognitive Behavioral Treatments for…2012). Extinction refers to the cessation of reinforcing a trend in order to eliminate a habit, (Cherry, n.d.). The main goal sleep modification treatment is to get rid of some bad habits that are counterproductive to sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene consist of four areas: circadian rhythm (internal clock that makes people go to sleep), aging, psychological stressors, and stimulants (caffeine, alcohol and other drugs) usage all these forms what it is called sleep hygiene. Activities such as naps, watching TV late at night, the use of electronic devices, and consuming stimulants can deprive adequate rest at night. Behavior modification improve sleeping patterns by eradicating these factors and establishing a regular routine to achieve the desired goal, which in this case is quality and quantity of sleep, (Cognitive Behavioral Treatments for…2012).
