Millions of people around the world suffer from a sleep disorder. Sleeping disorders affect over seventy-five percent of people in America. Sleep disorders can cause severe health problems in any person. Sleep is very important when trying to have good health, but sleep disorders cause many people to not get a sufficient amount of sleep. There are many types of sleep disorders such as, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, nightmares, and night terrors. Sleep disorders can cause people to not sleep well at night and be extremely tired throughout the day.
Insomnia can last his or her whole life, or it can last for only a short period of time. Insomnia is classified by duration of time such as, transient insomnia, short-term insomnia, and chronic insomnia (Stanford Health Care). Short term insomnia can last up to three months, and it affects fifteen to twenty percent of people (Sleep Education). Insomnia can also be classified into the categories primary insomnia and co-morbid insomnia (Stanford Health Care). Primary insomnia is when it is present with no other co-existing disease (Stanford Health Care). Co-morbid insomnia is when it exists along with another medical or psychiatric condition (Stanford Health Care).
Insomnia has many different causes. Medications for colds, allergies, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, birth control, asthma, and depression can cause insomnia (National Sleep Foundation). Insomnia can also be caused by stress, other sleep disorders, medical conditions, mental disorders, medications or substance use or abuse, environmental factors, and habits or lifestyles (Sleep Education). It is said that almost twenty percent of car crashes are caused by people having a type of sleep disorder. If doctors keep working, soon people will be able to control his or her sleep disorder so maybe that percentage of car crashes will drop.
