Waking up in the Morning Most alarm clocks in many high school students’ room buzz between six to seven thirty am, because most of the high schools in Manitoba begin at eight thirty am. However, with many extracurricular activities, work, volunteer opportunities, and homework the many students have to do in order to prepare themselves for future careers and scholarships, they usually end up going to bed between one and three. This can cause sleep deprivation and prevent students from maximizing the learning opportunities offered by the education system. Sleep deprivation can also affect their health and lead to conditions such as depression and diabetes. Further, it can lead to accidents if students drive with sleep deprivation. According to National Sleep Foundation, “teens are unable to pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress, and retain information” (National Sleep Foundation) because of sleep deprivation. Mark Fischetti, a writer in Scientific American (an officially published magazine site), affirms that “hundreds of school districts in the U.S. have experimented with later start times and the academic performance of students has improved across the board” (Fischetti). Fischetti says that as a result, “grades in science, math, English and social studies all rose when school began at 8:35 or later” (Fischetti). In high school, high grades need to be obtained in order to receive an admittance from universities. Even though not many universities only consider grades, grades are the main part of choosing their future attending students. Most of the students attend the university to have a better career, high wage job that will support them in the future. Grades are significantly important to many students when considering future universities and careers. However, despite all these concerns, National Sleep Foundation affirms that “most districts that have changed their start time have experienced few problems with regard to athletics” (National Sleep Foundation), because “practice times are rescheduled” (National Sleep Foundation) and “match times are changed so that students do not have to leave class early” (National Sleep Foundation). According to National Sleep Foundation, better consequences were out in the result. They say that “many districts have even seen increased participation in sports (Edian, MN) and improved performance by their teams (Wilton, CT; Nathan Hale, Seattle, WA)” (National Sleep Foundation). Another problem facing later release time saying that teachers have less time with their families seem to be untrue. Nation Sleep Foundation states that “teachers rarely find this to be true” (National Sleep Foundation) and that “many are able to spend more time with young students in the morning” (National Sleep Foundation). It also adds that “some elect to arrive at school at the same time and complete planning before school, meaning their schedules are unchanged” (National Sleep Foundation).
