There are many groups in our society today who are stereotyped, discriminated against, and look down upon. Almost every culture or race has a stereotype, but stereotypes are not just centered to different races and ethnic background. There are many other stereotypes that exist, including gender stereotypes, sexual orientation stereotypes, and many more. There are also small sub-culture groups that are targeted by stereotypes, such as skateboarders. Skateboarders are constantly being stereotyped and frowned upon by society because of their choice of self-expression. This article is very opinionated, poisonous, and highly offensive to skateboarders. Ouellette is really just ranting throughout the whole article, about his hate for the actions of skateboarders. He begins his article with him stating that he doesn’t want to be the cranky old man that’s yelling “Hey! You kids, get off of my lawn!” but instead he yells “You skateboarders, get off of my road!” He says that he doesn’t have anything against skateboarding in general and that as a kid he owned a skateboard. He had one back when he was a child, when “the board was a skinny plank.” He also adds that one of his sons has a skateboard. He is very upset at the fact that skateboarders “show up at all hours of the day on virtually any street in the city, cruising causally down the middle of the road as if they were behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry.” He then states that, “Just having four wheels doesn’t make you a moving vehicle. [They] don’t have a bumper, a seat belt, [or] an airbag. [He] is sure [that they] don’t have collision insurance. He makes a not-so-funny about how he has run over almost six skateboarders in the past couple of years. Four of them were by accident. He complains about how they wont move, even when they are approached by a car. He uses a stereotype by saying that skateboarders don’t see that they’re in his way because they are too busy guzzling Red Bull. He goes on to state that he does not understand the appeal of the skateboard as transportation and that skateboarders should just get a bike. Ouellette makes another sarcastic remark, he says “sure, a skateboard has other uses, it can be used as a clubbing weapon, especially during a zombie apocalypse, it can be a personal picnic table, a bridge over a very small stream, an emergency flotation device and a Lazy Susan for the Thanksgiving table.” He insists
Everyday we experience stereotyping in one way or another. Over the years stereotyping has become such a large part of our society that it is a vital part of our everyday communication. It has caused many of us to not really think about who a person really is, or what they are about, but to accept instead a certain stereotype that has already been created by our society and given to an individual. The first skateboards were made in the 1950’s being used as an exciting activity to take part in when the waves were down. From then and now the sport has changed tremendously, thanks to a group of young skaters from a slum area of Venice Beach or Dog-town, as the locals called it, known as the z-boys in the 1970’s. Even though skateboarding was already known and invented, the z-boys are the ones who made skating famous and took it to new heights in popularity. But how did they do this? The Z-boys made this sport what it is today, and played a very important part in the history and evolution of skateboard style and quality.
Stereotypes are the shackles of mankind. Personally, after racism, I really detest stereotypes; I just don’t understand why people in this world judge each other so much, it’s aggravating, irritating and infuriating. You can’t and shouldn’t judged someone over someone else’s actions; hence being the reason as to why God created everyone to be different and unique. For instance, one of the most common stereotypes that Indians are labelled with is that they love curry. “Oh I’m sorry” I didn’t know you get judged for liking a type of food. Individually, I love food and I also love curry but I am African, so does that make me an Indian? NO! Stereotypes can’t define a person and it shouldn’t define a race either. Why let someone else’s actions falsely define another person or why let someone’s skin colour define that person? For example: an albino is white but what if both of his parents are black, how would you define him, Black or White? Also, another thing that I hate, which I think a lot of teenagers can relate to, is when you’re walking down the street wearing a hoodie or a tracksuit and an older person in front of you sees you but chooses to cross over to the other side of the road because “you’re dangerous” or “a drug dealer” or maybe even “a serial killer” just for wearing that type of clothing. It’s actually truly pathetic classifying someone else by their choice of clothing as the last time I checked it was a free Country and you can wear as you please. I admit some of these stereotypes might be true but that doesn’t mean they relate to everyone. As, sometimes even I get quite terrified when I’m walking by myself and a see a gang of teenage boys in hoodies and tracksuits, but it’s because my brain is brain washed with all the negative things that’s said about them. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. Sometimes it can be neutral in a preliminary assessment of someone, and at other times can be very harmful to the person being stereotyped. To stereotype people often demonstrates ones’ own ignorance and foolishness.

As skateboarding evolved, it was once something kids do in their free time, later became a prospering sport. This started many new changes to our local cities. “No skateboarding” signs are being posted places that skateboarders would go to practice. Architects are finding new ways to redesign structures like benches and handrails in the city, in order to lower the abundance of skateboarder in an area. All these changes have resulted in a good amount of money spent redoing everything to prevent skateboarding, but nothing is being done to give skateboarders a safe place to skate. For young teens whose only transportation is a skateboard, they can only travel so far, and skateparks are not close enough. To eliminate the amount of skateboarders in heavily populated areas, I propose that cities invest more money into building skateparks so skateboarders have a safe place to practice the sport.

Stereotypes are deeply embedded in every society in numerous ways. The dictionary definition of a stereotype is “one that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.” Stereotyping or Labeling is a technique that “attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds undesirable.” These stereotypes become so cliché that they begin to form daily thoughts and views and one is unable to look beyond them. They then become dominant ideologies that are impossible to remove. These stereotypes are inevitable since they have been a key player in the propaganda that the west promotes to other cultures and societies.
