Sir Richard Branson
Background
Sir Richard Branson learned, from an early age, not to let adversity stand in the way of accomplishing a goal. As a pioneering thinker, he has transformed many entrenched industry practices by turning the traditional business model on its end. A unique approach to business is his hallmark and he is a person that is not afraid to challenge convention and encourages creativity. Obstacles
Surrendering means you have determined that it is not worth the time, effort or money necessary to overcome the issue. The positive aspect of this approach is to avoid uncertainty. Uncertainty tends to cause fear in those who averse to taking risk, whether personal or financial in nature. Avoiding risk will keep a person in their zone of comfort as some of afraid of failure. A negative aspect of this approach is lack of personal and / or financial growth. Growth will never happen without taking risk.
Comprise means you have determined that it is not necessary to accomplish all of the goals and that a less than ideal outcome is good enough. When engaging in a compromise, some original needs are unmet. For instance, you receive a late charge on a bill since the biller received the payment after the due date. Your goal is the have that late charge on a bill reversed, however, you only have it reduced by half. Neither party involved receives exactly what they intended, however, both parties are generally satisfied with the outcome. Using this same example reveals a potential drawback to this approach. You were not late with the payment and have proof to that effect; however, the same result is accomplished. You will feel slighted by the biller and the business you conduct with them may suffer.
Brian, a young business executive, started a small software company in his mid twenties. He would invest long hours developing his business, often working late into the nights. When the business became profitable, Brian incorporated and went public through a stock offering. Flood gates open and money poured in the company coffers and Brian grew exceedingly wealthy.
Many cases appeared in “To Build a Fire” where the man could have surrendered without giving up (Gonzales 98). For example, after the man broke through the ice and wet himself to the knees, he could not let go of the fact that his feet were freezing even though his hands would not work (London 86). If he had let go of the fact that his feet were freezing, he would have been able to think more clearly and find a way around using his hands. Another example of the man not letting go would be when he could not shake the thought that he would never make it to camp with the guys (London 89). If he would have put this behind him, he would have been able to focus on his safety from the start of his journey. Not only could he not let the possibility that he would not meet with the guys go, he could not let go of the fear of dying. He let it get to him instead, which only made him act without thinking. Had the man surrendered in any of these cases and let go of his fears, he would have been able to clear his mind to think of better ways of
Today, in the business world, there are many influential and successful men and women; however, one particular man has influenced my life, as a role model and inspiration. Matthew Menner is the senior vice president of strategy for Transplace, Inc. He works for a leading third-party logistics and technology solutions provider, focusing on transportation management business processes outsourcing. Throughout his life he has held many jobs, but they all have one thing in common: each job he has received is from his network. Though his jobs are respectable, it is not just those that have inspired me; it is how he got there and the process of becoming a successful business leader that motivate me. Matthew Menner graduated from Green Mountain College, where he received his associates degree in liberal arts. From there, he followed his dream of working on the railroad and went to college at Syracuse University and completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration-marketing management, and masters in transportation and distribution-marketing management (Green Mountain College). After meeting Menner during a presentation at Castleton State College, I realized he reminded me of myself. His inspiring story encouraged me to believe I can and will achieve my goals because of the determination and drive he has shown me I possess. I know I can accomplish the unimaginable, because of Menner’s success.

In his article, “The Sure Thing”, Malcolm Gladwell argues that the conventional thought of entrepreneurs as ‘hot-headed risk takers’ is absolutely wrong. From Ted Turner to Sam Walton and John Paulson, Mr. Gladwell arrives at the conclusion that many successful entrepreneurs are not high-risk risk takers, but are instead merciless, careful thinking attackers. Many of them are not even taking risks- they simply see an opportunity presented to them that most others do not consider. They all consistently minimize chances for failure along the way, and always see what they do through until the end.

In the book “Think and Grow Rich,” the author, Napoleon Hill, provides a set of principles that he calls the key to financial success. The idea at the center of these principles is that one becomes what he or she frequently thinks about, in this case success (i.e. rich). Hill lays out a method he created to translate one’s thoughts into reality, creating an insatiable hunger and drive within an individual to succeed. Using the examples of his son and some of America’s legendary iconic business leaders, of which Hill studied and interviewed, including Edwin C. Barnes, he demonstrates that anything one puts his or her mind to can be produced and conceived.

The success of a business is greatly dependent on its entrepreneur. An entrepreneur is someone who takes the financial risk of starting and managing a new business venture. In order to be a successful entrepreneur, one must be ready to take a risk and invest one’s own savings into a business. The job requires that the individual be ambitious and committed to working hard in order to achieve the set targets. A successful entrepreneur is able to multi-task and communicates effectively with people, possessing leadership qualities such as confidence and motivation. The individual must play the role of constant motivator and inspire employees to improve their work performance, whilst ensuring a comfortable environment for the employees to work in. According to Schumpeter (1982), an entrepreneur is more of a ‘heroic’ than an ‘economic’ figure; his motivation should not solely be monetary, rather stemming more from inspiration and ambition.
