Single Parent Families In Today’s Society As long remembered by society, youth who have been raised in single parent families are considered to be unconventional than those young people who are raised in two parent homes. To many, the idea of being raised by one parent instead of both a mother and father is unimaginable but, our society has grown, and with it, the idea of single parent families has increased as well. In today’s society, it is shown that children, whether they have been raised by one parent, are two parents, have become successful in their lives and are independently sufficient. The complication exists in the controversy of youth being raised by single parents oppose to a child of two parent families. What makes a family?

This statement that suggests criminals are the output of single-parent juvenility is illogical. What the writer must grasp is that it is challenging for a single parent to care for a child by themselves for multiple reasons. A single-parent is required to work full time to be able to provide support for themselves and their child. I know from a secondary experience that what Robert L. Magginnis, the author the article is trying to communicate is inaccurate. My nephews never had a father around while growing up but did, in fact, have positive male role models. My dad, their Grandfather was always there to educate and support them as they slowly unfolded into young men. Anytime their mother had to work to support herself and her kids, my dad was there to step up and provide the time and attention they needed. They also had almost a step-father figure in their life to support them and raise them. Therefore, they had the best support group for them as young men. Other factors, such as poor neighborhood conditions, can also result in poorer parenting, which affects the adolescent’s behavior. Also, children who have suffered child abuse are generally filled with more violence, resulting in their aggressive behaviors due to a accumulated anger. Single Parent Struggle For many years, children growing up in a single parent family have been viewed as different. Being raised by only one parent seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. The problem lies in the difference of children raised by single parents versus children raised by both a mother and a father.
The Family structure has changed significantly in the last fifty years. With higher percentages of marriage ending in divorce, and higher rates of childbearing out of wedlock, single parent families are increasing rapidly. “Seventy percent of all the children will spend all or part of their lives in a single-parent household.” (Dowd) Studies have shown that the children of these families are affected dramatically, both negatively and positively. Women head the majority of single- parent families and as a result, children experience many social problems from growing up without a father. Some of these problems include lack of financial support, and various emotional problems by not having a father around, which may contribute to problems later in life. At the same time, children of single-parent homes become more independent because they learn to take care of themselves, and rely on others to do things for them.

The increase in single- parent homes has had an extensive and negative effect on children’s development. 50% of marriages end in divorce. We have young people with young minds having children, they can hardly take care of themselves at the age of 21, yet they have decided to bring four children into this world to be raised by one parent. In some communities, majority of the children are being raised by a single parent. Statistics have shown that children raised in a healthy single parent home have more problems emotionally, psychologically, in school, and with the law than those raised in healthy two-parent homes. No matter how good a single parent is, that a single parent can NEVER do for the child how two present, committed, parent partners share and work together; communicate together and solve problems together as equals.
Current family issue is single mother parenting because it refers to a lot of women including myself that have to deal with single parenting. Single parent families, mostly women have increased in a poverty level outcome. In many instances, a single mother must take on and consist of role expectations, developmental task, and labor inequalities. Problems of single parent families are compounded by economic difficulties. By approaching this topic with the use of Feminist Perspective theory and The Family Development Perspective, I will provide points to why this is a family issue in today’s society.
