n the essay "The Simple Genius of the Blackboard: Why the board-centered classroom is still the best place to teach and learn," Lewis Buzbee talks about what the board in the front of the classrooms has represented in schools throughout the years. He narrates how the erasable slates from before the 1800’s have been developed into the big board found in front of classrooms; in 1800, a teacher connected all the erasable slates to allow a geographic map to be presented on a much bigger board, as well as in 1801 when another teacher connected them to write complex math formulas. After only few years, in 1815, they have been advanced into the blackboard that was first being manually manufactured, and by 1840 blackboards were being manufactured by …show more content…
For example, some teachers do not like to use any type of board; Buzbee is one of them. He said he does not have patience for handwriting on a big board and prefers to sit with his students around a big table and talk but sometimes he “can’t help himself and have to go to the whiteboard.” But also he argues: “Once I start on the board, I often can’t stop and continue to add phrases, strange pictures, the titles of books, sometimes just marks, a kind of visual punctuation. “ One thing comes off clearly: if teachers are not trained prior to using the today’s boards, the benefits in teaching cannot be guaranteed. Nevertheless, “Smart Boards--interactive whiteboards in general--are relatively easy to use. Testament to that is found in Kellie Gaffney 's classroom at Liberty Elementary School in Flower Mound, TX. Gaffney taught her students-kindergarteners--how to calibrate the board” ().Thus, each teacher will have to get a basic training on it. Teacher effectiveness is closely linked to the ability to use all forms of interaction possible in the context of education through the new technologies and, accordingly, to mastering the multimedia and communication involved. Today, 40 out of the 53 schools in Hazzard 's former district, the Lambton Kent District School Board in Ontario, Canada, have interactive whiteboards. And Hazzard, now an educational consultant, says teachers, seeing their students more engaged than ever, are clamoring for more. Grades have gone up; suspensions have gone down. At one point, Devine Street Public School, where Hazzard used to teach, actually had more suspensions than students. But this past year, it had only 20. And the learning community has widened: Hazzard shares whiteboard lessons with 1,500 teachers on his own
Ted Dekker’s Black is a beautifully imaginative book with vivid and strongly rendered emotion; his parallels to our relationship with the Lord and the fall of man are both new and creative as well as highly accurate. The tale with Thomas Hunter, shot in the head by the mob, beginning to dream in another reality. A reality that is virtually perfect. It is here that he obtains prophetic information, which says that a virus will be made that has the potential to decimate a large portion of humanity. Ironically, it is Thomas’ prophecies that bring the virus to light in the first place.
In his work, “A Talk to Teachers,” James Baldwin poured out his point of view on how he believed American children should be taught. Throughout the essay, Baldwin focused on a specific race of school children: Negros. Perhaps this was because he himself was an African American, or even for the mere idea that Negros were the most vulnerable for never amounting to anything — according to what the American society thought during the twentieth century, specifically the 1960s when this piece was published. With the focus determined, the reader is able to begin analyzing Baldwin’s main appeal through the essay. At first glance one could argue that the essay has no credibility with Baldwin’s lack of not being a school teacher himself; however, when further evaluated one could state that whether or not he was a school teacher has nothing to do with the fact that he establishes his credibility, he appeals to morals, emotions with authority, and values, which thus outweighs the possible negativities associated with his argument.
Technology has come a long way in the last forty years. We have so many options today to use in classrooms that we should be producing technology savoy students. One of the biggest technology tools to enter the classrooms is the use of Smartboards. At first any teacher can become overwhelmed. I mean a board that is called smart? What can this device do that will make learning to read more fun and engaging and yet be a valid form of learning? Well, with time and refresher after refresher classes, it is now clear.
It is evident that Gerald Graff’s article is bias because he avoids talking about acquiring academic intelligence through academic learning rather than non-academic ways. For instance, Graff shows bias when he generalizes our way of seeing educated life and academics. He said that, “We associate the educated life, the life of the mind, too narrowly and exclusively with subjects and texts that we consider inherently weighty and academic. We assume that it’s possible to wax intellectual about Plato, Shakespeare, the French Revolution, and nuclear fission, but not about cars, dating fashion, sports, TV, or video games.” (Graff 264-5). Graff clearly thinks that everyone associates educated life with academics, when in reality this is not true. He believes that
The American system of education is considered to be one of the most progressive in the world. One of the surveys on attitudes toward teaching around the world found that the United States is unique in its strong emphasis on "good teaching." My experience at State College has helped me to understand better how this system works, and what methods and techniques American teachers use to motivate their students for creative and active learning. However, I can also see that this system doesn’t work perfectly in every classroom. Reading Ernest Boyer’s article “Creativity in the Classroom” helped me with my understanding of the main problem that nowadays exists with the American college education system. According to the author, the problem is that teachers and students don’t see each other as one team doing the same business; therefore, in most classrooms the process of learning becomes a boring procedure instead of being mind-blowing. Moreover, reading this article, I could analyze the reasons of this problem that the author identifies through my own experiences at State College.
In the essay “Thought” by Louis H. Sullivan, he states that people don’t always need words just to communicate. There are several ways that individuals are able to communicate without words, they can express themselves by gestures and facial features, like explaining themselves to others. Sullivan believes that both thinking and creative thinking are better without words and that the minds is always working; therefore, it does not have time to place words together. In order to think clearly they must use other means of pondering; although, the mind works quickly it will take a long time to write what they are thinking because the mind continues without stopping. When individuals are reading they are not think their own thought exactly but what
In the article “Technology in the Classroom: Beginnings and Endings”, Mary Ann Matras suggests that, “The pencil is still the most efficient tool”. Many people will agree with her argument because students have learned that way for many years and it has worked. It is also a common fact that when a person writes something down with a pen or pencil they are more likely to remember the information rather than typing it. Author, Mary Ann Matras continues to explain more about why the pencil is a powerful tool, ” When a student can use a pencil to do a calculation faster than and as well as, he or she can do it with a computer or calculator, then the tool for the job should be the pencil,” Mary Ann Matras states. Another issue that classrooms have with technology is that it takes away class time. If a student can do their work as fast as a computer than they don’t need the computer, it is better for them to work it out by themselves. Also, if it takes the same amount of time as writing with a pencil does than a pencil is a better
An interview with Karen Cator, director of the Office of Educational Technology, part of the U.S. Department of Education, is presented. When asked about a good example of the use of technology in education, Cator discusses Mooresville Graded School District in Mooresville, North Carolina, which use laptops and interactive whiteboards in education. Cator also addresses the importance of student engagement in education, online courses, and the use of digital media devices in classrooms.
Although some teachers still use regular boards, most teachers use smart boards to teach. These boards are like ordinary boards except these are controlled by a remote control pen. By just clicking on the board questions can be written in a variety of ways and in any color you want. The final piece of tech that is mainly used in the classroom is a variety of websites that provide tests, quizzes, and assignments that students can access with a certain username and password. Research has found that all types of technology are changing the way teachers teach forever (usnews.com).
William Golding demonstrates his view of thinking in his short reading. He begins with an important part of his life when he thinks back into his childhood at his headmaster’s room and noticed three statuettes on the cupboard. He has always noticed these statuettes, but never thought of them as anything until he became more mature. He uses these statuettes to symbolize the three grades of thinking. The three grades of thinking are, grade-three, grade-two, and grade-one.
Our schools have progressed tremendously in the past century. In fact, in the past three decades, we have seen much progression with the use of computers in the classroom. We have gone from one room school houses with one teacher teaching many grades, to schools that may be two stories high or more with many teachers for each grade.More students are in school in today’s society than there...
...owing every year. It can be predicted that the interactive whiteboard will have an even greater result on students when it becomes a more familiar tool to teachers
All three teachers use multimedia by using Smart Boards. They are technological boards that teachers use to write and present information which is shown to be beneficial. All of the teachers use Power Point presentations to not only inform, but also to entertain students with pictures that relate to the learning material. Sometimes, the teachers will use the chalkboard to write additional information that will emphasize what’s important when it comes to learning new concepts. For example, Teacher B wrote the definition of the word slope, which means the rate of change. He drew a box around the word to show how important the definition was for students to understand, especially since the New York State Regents uses it as well. The teachers lecture by reading the notes from the board so their students are listening and paying attention. Like Power Point presentations, teachers inform and engage students in lessons by communicating verbally. For instance, Teacher C lectured how using logarithms in mathematics can be useful outside of class for applications in business and biology. Teachers, who display information on the Smart Board, as well as explaining themselves, demonstrate how they accommodate students with different learning styles. Aside from using multimedia methods and lecturing, teachers have students work with each other in small groups.
In the past, technology was something that was only used in our homes and by the wealthy. However, this has become a thing of the past. Classrooms have become more interactive and lessons seem to be more engaging. Students have been given the opportunity to use Smart Boards, document cameras, projectors, and wireless slates. In order for our students to feel comfortable, when using the different technologies, they must have some amount of background knowledge. If a student is not given this background knowledge, they will have more difficulty utilizing the technology than someone who has the background knowledge. Teachers in classrooms today must also have some type of knowledge of the technology being used. A great way to build this knowledge is to attend training sessions that your district may be holding, and utilize the technology as much as possible.
...assroom. Sometimes there are people that it would not help learn because they need that face-to-face learning. It is just the way that they learn that it could benefit them or it could not . It should be up to the students on it they want to use the old fashion pen and paper or this new technology.
