Similarities of To Kill a Mockingbird and Remember the Titans
Both To Kill Mockingbird and Remember the Titans had their communities play a crucial role into the development of the story. In the towns of Maycomb County and Alexandria, Virginia, many of the blacks experienced racial prejudice to which they became united with their other blacks. However their was always a leader who wanted to change the community for the better. Because of the similarities of To Kill a Mockingbird and Remember the Titans the audience can see how important community is in the development of a story.
In Maycomb and Alexandria, the whites in the community do not treat the blacks respectfully. When Coach Boone first arrives into town from North Carolina the white residents responds to the sight of a black man saying, "Why aren't outside with all your little friends hollering," as well as, "are those people the movers?" The whites create a stereotype about Boone stating that since he is black he is like all the other rowdy blacks. This stereotype is false since Coach Boone is urbane and reserved, not wanting to cause a riot on his first day in town. Additionally when the town assumes that all African-Americans are "the help" shows that the whites see themselves as superior than blacks. During the 1930s in Maycomb, Mrs. Dubose says to Scout, "Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for" (102). Mr. Dubose, being prejudiced saying whites or above blacks, also shows how the town in both stories is prejudiced towards the minority of blacks. So because the blacks are not seen as equal, the development of the story is played out to show how the African-Americans respond to the whites racial discrimination. ...ommunity for the better. Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird said, "But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men" (273). Atticus can see past skin color to try to do the most justified thing for an innocent man. Atticus is trying to change the prejudice community so that they cannot judge someone by their race. Atticus and Coach Boone are similar in regards of them trying to put an end to the prejudice of the whites towards the blacks.
To Kill Mockingbird and Remember the Titans' communities were extremely similar. Both Maycomb and Alexandria were prejudice towards blacks, had their African-American unified together, and also had a leader wanting to change the racial barrier between the two races. These traits help the community develop a sorry about how Atticus Finch and Coach Boone positively changed a prejudice community.
