I decided to review “Silver Linings Playbook”, which is based on a romantic-comedy novel written by Matthew Quick. It was produced in 2012 by The Weinstein, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro. This film, directed by David O. Russell, takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where former teacher Pat Solitano Jr. (Bradley Cooper) is released after 8 months of hospitalization by his mother Delores (2012). Due to living with bipolar disorder with mood swings, Pat has anger outburst if not managed properly. After finding his wife cheating and after brutally beating the man with her, Pat was committed where he was closely watched and given treatment such as medication (that could be spit out easily). The main character Pat who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, displayed signs of manic episodes such as: fast talking, rambling with words, and no sleep. There were about 3 scenes of Pat waking his parents up early in the morning because he was looking for something, or could not wait to tell them something in the morning. Throughout most of the film, Pat exhibits a lot of delusions. Before hospitalization, it is briefly mentioned that Pat was accusing his wife and another teacher (who ironically was the man who this wife cheated on) embezzling money from him. For an example in one particular scene, Tiffany has an episode of irritability towards her sister with assumption that her sister hates her; which included loud inappropriate comments and an abrupt exit. There were also symptoms shown such as an excess desire for sex. Tiffany casually talks about all the men she has slept with since her husband’s death, including “the whole office” at her previous job. This is a way she has learned how to deal with her depression. Obsessive compulsive disorder was also displayed in this film portrayed by Pat’s dad, Pat Sr. Pat Sr. showed a true obsession with football by relying his income on illegal bookmaking. There many behaviors Pat Sr. engages in for “good luck” such as having a handkerchief with him at all times, lining the remotes a certain way, and wearing a Philadelphia Eagels jersey. In the movie Silverlining Playbook, directed by David O. Russell, Patrick Solatano who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder who is released from a mental institution and partners up with tiffany in the hopes to get back with his wife. In Perks of being a wallflower directed by Steven Chobsky, Charlie suffers from depression after his best friends suicide and PTSD due to being sexualy abused by his Aunt Karen at an early age. Both directors effectively depict these varying mental disorders in american society by accurately portraying the mental disorder symptoms, relating the conflicts to the audience, and by challenging previous negative stereotypes.
The narrator is forbidden from work and confined to rest and leisure in the text because she is supposedly stricken with, "…temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency," that is diagnosed by both her husband and her brother, who is also a doctor (1).
In the film, American Psycho, Patrick Bateman was a wealthy investment banker who also happened to be a serial killer. He was highly intelligent and was charming which attracted many of the women who came his way. Unlike most people in the world, he lived in constant pain. When told in High School that he was too small to play baseball, he chose not to join the chess team, but lift weights and play football instead. Headstrong and filled with hubris, he would decide his course and stick with it. While meeting with the head coach of ASU’s football team he announced to his superior, “Coach, you can play me or not play me, but I’m only going to be here four years. Christy Lemire has such a unique writing style and with her amazing credential’s for writing for the American Press, the reader can trust her opinion. She has such a distinctive and light hearted tone throughout her entire review and the reader can tell she has an honest adoration for Silver Linings Playbook. When she writes, her target audience is the people who would actually see this movie, the young adult, to the older woman or gentleman, who could probably relate to this film at some point in their lives. She starts off the beginning of her review with a quick synopsis and also mentions how well the director David O. Russell finds the perfect balance between the sweet and fun loving comedy, with
...f the bad that is going on in her real life, so she would have a happy place to live. With the collapse of her happy place her defense was gone and she had no protection from her insanity anymore. This caused all of her blocked out thoughts to swarm her mind and turn her completely insane. When the doctor found her, he tried to go in and help her. When the doctor finally got in he fainted because he had made so many positive changes with her and was utterly distressed when he found out that it was all for naught. This woman had made a safety net within her mind so that she would not have to deal with the reality of being in an insane asylum, but in the end everything failed and it seems that what she had been protecting herself from finally conquered her. She was then forced to succumb to her breakdown and realize that she was in the insane asylum for the long run.
There is no one to listen to her or care for her ‘personal’ opinions. Her husband cares for her, in a doctor’s fashion, but her doesn’t listen to her (Rao, 39). Dealing with a mentally ill patient can be difficult, however, it’s extremely inappropriate for her husband to be her doctor when he has a much larger job to fulfill. He solely treats his wife as a patient telling her only what could benefit her mental sickness rather than providing her with the companionship and support she desperately needs. If her husband would have communicated with her on a personal level, her insanity episode could have been prevented. Instead of telling her everything she needed he should’ve been there to listen and hear her out. Instead she had to seek an alternate audience, being her journal in which he then forbids her to do. All of this leads to the woman having nobody to speak or express emotion to. All of her deep and insane thoughts now fluttered through her head like bats in the Crystal Cave.
Pat is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and displays two hyperactive mood swings: maniac and depressive (Martinez, 2004) (Russell, 2014). During his maniac mood swings, he demonstrates poor judgement, aggressive behavior, unwise financial choices and increased drive to achieve goals. During his depressive swings, Pat is sad and hopeless and demonstrates anxiety and trepidation and considers suicide and suffers from chronic pain. Tiffany on the other hand treats in order to compensate for feeling guilty sleep with everyone in her office and then treats anyone who comes close to her as a threat. This in itself is difficult to understand. She frantically tries to avoid her grief by having extreme relationships and social problems (Russell,

After noticing Pat’s uncontrollable anger and mood swings, he was diagnosed to be bipolar. Upon being released from the hospital, Pat was very compulsive and persistent in reaching out to his wife. Throughout this movie we saw him go from extreme euphoria to being ballistic. For example, One night Pat could not find his wedding video and his anger went through the roof, which left the house torn apart and his parents hurt. He also had a trigger that regularly set him off making him rash and angry. He walked in on his wife cheating on him while their wedding song was on, so every time he hears the song he lashes out. It is also discovered that the main source of his distress is his family’s murder when he was a child, especially of his father, whose death he blames himself for. Paul convinces himself throughout the movie that he has been cured while leaving the underlying cause unexamined and unresolved. Ben realizes the underlying problem when he was invited to lunch at Paul’s favorite restaurant, but told that it’s the restaurant where his father got murdered at, right before his eyes, when Paul was a child.
