Sigmund Freud is one of the founding fathers in psychology that will change how we treat mental patients in America for years to come. He influenced psychologists around the world with his techniques and theories about human behavior. Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856 to a poor Jewish family (American Psychological Association, 2004). He was considered the “golden boy” in his family because he was considered the favorite out of his sisters. His parents supported everything he decided to study. He decided to go into the medical field. He discovered he was interested in the human brain. He then wanted to study the biological origin of disease in the mind. In 1900 Freud published The Interpretation of Dreams that became the birth of psychoanalysis …show more content…
After this book was published he did not think of himself as a “man of science” or an “experimenter” because he thought of himself as adventurer discovering the human mind (Anderson, 2001). His next adventure was from this model where he would soon discover the Freudian Slip because illicit sexuality was the central idea. The Interpretation of Dreams became the basis to many psychological theories. This book lead him to discover many ideas that are still studied in America today. Freud 's impact on psychoanalysis lead others to build on his ideas and make them fit to how society is currently. Some key figures that wrote books that used his ideas to fit current society are Perls and Gestalt therapy by Clarkson & Mackewn in 1993 and Carl Rogers and person-centered therapy by Thorned in 2003 (Jacobs, 2003). These key figures expanded on his ideas by turning them into their own therapeutical methods. Freud has discovered many ideas that have lead people to create new ideas in therapy.
