Should Schools Start Later?
Many high school students, including myself, do not get enough sleep. The idea of sleeping in sounds like the best thing ever, especially after those late night study sessions. Often times, teenagers are not able to sleep in late because of school or work schedules. There are many side effects of sleep deprivation, but proven benefits of starting days later.
Sleep deprivation is a major problem among today’s youth. Only 15% of youth reported getting more than 8.5 hours of sleep on a school night. Teens tend to stay up and sleep in late on weekends, disrupting the natural sleep cycle. This makes it harder to sleep during the week. This can cause a variety of sleep disorders, including narcolepsy, insomnia, sleep apnea, among other things.
Besides forming sleep disorders, other consequences can arise in sleep deprived teens and adults. These consequences can range anywhere from forgetfulness to angry behavior to skin and weight problems. Sleep deprivation can increase the likelihood of addiction to drugs or alcohol and chance of dangerous behavior.
The things listed previously affect teens, but some things that develop throughout the teen years, such as depression, addictions, and irritability will follow these people into adulthood. A correct biological clock was never established while growing up, and, as a result, never developed. This begins a lifetime of poor sleep habits.
One may ask, how do we prevent this from happening? Well, to stop the problem completely, you need to look where the problem originates, which is typically during high school and college years, when the most sleep is needed. We all know, sometimes too well, that we just won’t be able to get the full recommended hours of sleep for our age group every night. There are a few things that can be done to improve your next day grogginess. Caffeine is a go to for most people, whether it be coffee, pop, tea, or energy drinks. Caffeine is okay in moderation, as it will raise your heart rate, making you more excitable. Take breaks if possible. Stepping outside for fresh air will help tremendously. Take the easy way on as much as you can.
Schools starting later would benefit the students AND the schools, since students will be performing better, it will attract other students. It could be because of the outstanding academic department, or the later start times.
