Should Same Sex Marriage Be Legalized

In 2013 three states joined in on legalizing same sex marriage. California is once again allowing the union of homosexual couples after the California Supreme court ruled that the defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional. Hawaii was added to the list after a long time coming of hopes and dreams of many. The paradise state was one of the first to advocate that it was going to legalize same sex marriage and have finally come through. The most recent addition to this revolution however, is Illinois which is the sixteenth state to announce its legalization. The state will start to recognize the union of homosexuals in June of 2014.

Same sex marriage is becoming more common in today’s society as more states have legalized the union of homosexual individuals. In 2004, when Massachusetts became the first state to allow same sex marriage, it sparked a fire that led to 15 other states to do the same. Over the past decade the controversial subject has gained exponential support and many people in the new generation of Americans are more accepting than in previous generations. However, there are still many supporters of anti-same sex marriage laws that are against these new-coming changes to American society. Traditions are changing and the American way of life is not the same as it was fifty years ago which is why same sex marriage should be legal. The government should not decide who is able to get married because anti-gay laws are unconstitutional and a violation of civil rights.

The ongoing war between both sides of the issue may never die down, however the many states that have changed their laws has revolutionized the way the issue is seen on the legal standpoint. In 2009, the California Supreme Court ruled ...

...nd have been advocating change for the past decade. The women of the 20th century were treated unfairly and had their rights violated just like the homosexuals are today.

To deny someone’s ability to marry is a violation of their civil rights. As seen earlier this year when the Supreme Court ruled that DOMA was unconstitutional, same sex marriage should be recognized at all state levels and on the federal level. Regardless of what anti-gay supporters say the rights of the homosexuals are being violated just like the rights of others were violated in past decades. The traditions we were once accustomed to are changing every year and the American people are becoming less strict about them. Since the American values are changing on the marriage level, the government should allow the union of same sex couples since banning these marriages is unconstitutional.
