When most people hear the word hemp, they assume it is another word for marijuana. I had the same notion but became recently educated on the difference. Speaking for a majority of the population, the assumption is that marijuana is a drug to get you high so in addition, hemp does the same thing considering it comes from the same plant that marijuana or weed does. Even though they both are grown from the same plant, there are completely different uses for hemp and not one of them is to achieve a psychedelic state. The discrepancies between the two has been fueled for almost a century and have yet to be clarified. Due to the fact that growing hemp is forbidden here in the U.S., our nation’s lack of knowledge and ignorance is crippling us in various forms.

Hemp fibers are extremely strong and can be used to replace wood due to their durability properties. Hempcrete is a creation using these hemp fibers along with lime and can be a viable replacement for insulation by being natural and flexible but less harmful than fiber glass. Hempcrete is still breathable and “free from toxins, impervious to mold and pests and virtually fireproof” (Chaban 8). How could this not be a good alternative to harmful chemicals used in the production of houses and buildings? Take asbestos for example. Asbestos can be found in a range of materials that are used in construction just like insulation. Health wise, it can lead to lung cancer, lifelong immune system problems and more. These effects could all be potentially fatal. By eliminating these harmful products and replacing them with hemp filled materials that have multiple uses and benefits, this could just be another outlet to help sustain our ecosystem and reduce waste and improve the quality of
