Since the introduction of marijuana into main stream culture several decades ago, the controversy over legalizing marijuana has never been more vocalized. There are arguments in today’s society stating marijuana is a drug that needs to be legalized for medical use; relieving ailments like headaches, body aches, and side effects from cancer. Some users even argue that marijuana helps them focus and motivates them throughout the day. On the contrary, clinical studies have shown the long term side effects from smoking the drug include memory loss, slower reaction time, and damage to the respiratory system. Adolescents view grown-ups as role models in their lives, ranging from family members to celebrities. According to David Scheff, the author of Marijuana Should Be Legal, but…, “A body of research shows that marijuana causes structural and functional changes in the developing brains of adolescents.” Marijuana has many negative side effects for adolescents that may include schizophrenia and even impairs high level thinking. Sheff also states, “Adolescents who abuse marijuana are more likely to suffer from clinical depression than those who are not users.” Clinical depression is described as a condition in which persistent low mood and related symptoms are severe enough to interfere with everyday life. Losing interest in activities, having trouble finding pleasure in things that you used to enjoy, deep sadness, and unexplained crying are just some of the possible symptoms of clinical depression. The word clinical implies that the symptoms are serious enough to require psychiatric treatment. “The drug may also cause amotivational syndrome for children,” according to Sheff. Amotivational syndrome is, “a mental condition linked with the weakened motivation to contribute in social circumstances and happenings, with gaps in unconcern caused by an outside condition, event, material or lack of, relationship or other cause,” Sheff explains. Legalizing marijuana is not the answer due to the fact, using marijuana has long term side effect, leads users to more harmful drugs, and the harmful effect it has on adolescents. Instead of states worrying about legalizing marijuana, politicians should focus more on enforcing the law more effectively, coming up with better prevention programs, and educate citizens. On its own a state will not be able to legalize marijuana because of state to state laws varying. You may be able to smoke freely in one state but in another state you will be fined or arrested for possessing marijuana. Even though some states have already legalized the freedom to buy and smoke marijuana if Amendment 64, which regulates and legalizes marijuana, goes into effect all over our country it will only intensify the nation’s drug
