The question on whether or not marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes is becoming quite the talk. Legalizing medical marijuana would be important and even life changing for those who could really use it. When learning about the legalization of
medical marijuana, it’s always best to know the background information, how it
can lead to many solution, and how it can cause issues in society.
As stated, centuries ago hemp was grown on Mount Vernon by George Washington (Sides). Marijuana seeds can be traced all the way back to 3000 B.C in Siberia which shows that it has almost always been around. In 1970 it became difficult to study hemp so it was classified as a Schedule I drug. A Schedule I drug is a substance that doesn’t have an accurate medical purpose, is dangerous, and has a higher chance of leading the user to drug abuse (Sides). With that being said it should be noted that there have never been any cases where someone has died from overdosing on this specific drug. Cannabis is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Marijuana has two very important ingredients with two very different
effects. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the ingredient that changes the brain
function, in other word makes a person high. Whereas Cannabidiol (CBD) is the
ingredient that can be used for medical reasons, but does nothing to the brain.
CBD is typically said to give people a “body high” rather than changing their
mental state.
Furthermore people are learning more about the benefits medical marijuana has towards helping illnesses. U.S Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated, “for certain medical conditions and symptoms it could be helpful.” (Sides). Smoking marijuana can harm a person’s brain function as well as their heart and lungs. People who frequently smoke big amounts of cannabis are known to have crazy like behaviors (McCoppin).
As stated in (Could Medical Pot Lead to Addiction), “The drug can impair short-term memory, judgment, thinking and driving, and long-term use has been associated with problems like chronic cough and cognitive impairment according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse” (McCoppin). In addition there was a study done on mice. The study was on how mice who were carried by their mothers whom were injected with the drug would react. It was then shown that the mice had problems interacting, had a low tolerance for anxiety and got scared easily (Sides).
