Medical Marijuana
For over 4,000 years marijuana has been used medically by a vast majority of different cultures around the world. Cannabis was used for medicine in the united states until 1937 when there was a new tax fee led to its discontinued use. Marijuana was placed under schedule one of the controlled substance act, the government believed there was no medical purpose.
At the federal level marijuana is illegal. In 1996 the State of California legalized medical marijuana in a limited amount per person. Several other states followed its lead, including the State of Minnesota in 2014. The reasons each state chose to legalize marijuana vary. Research indicates that “Americans who favor legalizing the use of marijuana continues to increase. Today 57% of U.S. adults say that use of marijuana should be made legal, while 37% of Americans say it should be illegal” (Pew Research Center). Those people who do not want to legalize marijuana argue that efforts to legalize it are “exchanging a criminal justice crisis for a public health crisis” said Thomas Fuller, and that the harmful effects are understated and not fully understood.
Those who support legalizing marijuana including many scientists and President Obama who feel that it is not as dangerous as it is thought to be, going so far as to say it is “no more dangerous than alcohol” Obama says exactly. (“Stop Treating Marijuana Like Heroin”). The Obama administration allowed state legalization efforts to move forward. Medical marijuana is legal in Canada and in 23 states in the the United States. If you live in a state with medical cannabis your next step is to ask your doctor if your condition is eligible. Some doctors are focused on the symptoms rather than the condition you have, overall it is up to your doctor if your eligible. Lastly the most important step is to find a doctor to sign your medical forms. (Medicinal Marijuana Association)
Cannabis has been used for medical purposes for a very long time. Marijuana was placed under the schedule one. Now more and more states have been considering on legalizing medical marijuana. People see it as the golden ticket for finally feeling relief after years of treatments not working.
