Should High Schools Offer Sports? A growing concern in the United States is high school sports. Sports can strengthen an individual 's physical, emotional and mental state. In addition, students in high school who play sports are oftentimes more likely to focus in class better, and for a longer periods of time. Furthermore, they work better in groups and generally have greater grade point averages than students who do not play sports (Psychological). High school sports should not be forced onto students, but be offered. Sports teach students skills that can be applied in school, and in everyday life. Prominent figures often participated in sports in the early parts of their lives. Barack Obama encourages high school sports; using his own experiences as a reference. A survey taken from 2012-2013 illustrates an estimated one-million-three-hundred-sixty-one-thousand-nine-hundred-eighty-six students per year get injured while playing some type of sport in high school. That is one-hundred-fifty-six high school athletes getting hurt per hour. Majority of injuries occur at the age of nineteen for both males and females, and the minimum amount of injuries occur at the ages of thirteen for males, and twelve for females. During competition thirty-nine percent of injuries are strains or sprains, twenty-seven percent are concussions, thirteen percent are other injuries, twelve percent are contusions and nine percent are fractures. During sports practice forty-seven percent of injuries are strains or sprains, twenty percent are other injuries, eighteen percent are concussions, eight percent are contusion and seven percent are fracture injuries
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
High school sports are one of American student’s favorite extracurricular activities. High school sports provide a sense of school pride and dedication to the athlete’s school. Many students play in hopes of a college scholarship in their desired sport. Despite the dreams that come with sports the sad truth is that many sport careers end short by some sort of injury. Injuries in high school sports vary from a range of things. High school athletes suffer from damage to the brain, spine, bones, ligaments, and tendons. Sports also take a mental toll of the athlete putting them at risk of cardiac arrest. Student Athletes are also pressured to take harmful performance enhancing products and take up harmful dietary patterns to try and gain an edge. Sports have many beneficial qualities but can be harmful to the body if performed in an unhealthy fashion. The truth is that anytime an athlete engages in physical activity they are at risk.

Some people may say that when you participate in a sport, it takes away from your studying time and then makes you not as academically inclined as others. Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.

The arguments make people, think again about having students play sports. Sports are useful because they give players skills they can use on and off the field: strength, leadership, and confidence.
For decades, students have been in school sports; however, they are experiencing a drop in their grades as well. After school activities can cost districts’ a great deal of money and they interfere with students’ time to study.
