In the Shawshank Redemption a theme of hope is evident throughout which is to be expected in a film about prison. In the Shawshank redemption hope is used to drive people to get out of the prison in Andy’s case and to travel down to Mexico based off of what a note said. Hope is often used in movies but just as much in real life and often helps people make it through a tough experience or to find something they have been looking for. I use hope at times to help brighten up a day or even sometimes an extended amount of time. Hope will drive you to push on and find your limits, and for this hope is the catalyst for our success in life and sport or in the movies case a drive to keep going no matter how hard.

Throughout my races I was driven by hope and fueled by the desires to be the best although I did have many failures along the way learning how to use hope in the best way. In the Shawshank Redemption Andy is driven day by day to escape from the Shawshank prison and works all night for nearly twenty years with a small rock hammer to chisel his way through the thick concrete walls of the prison. Red also is driven by hope nearing the end of the film when he finds the note that tells him to go to the town in Mexico Andy had told him about. He ventures south however he can and gets to that same town where he meets with his long lost friend Andy Dufresne. In life we unknowingly use hope to get us through our days and often times it works out perfectly and our job is to keep up with the curveballs life throws and adapt our hopes and desires
Society can be very cruel; hopes and dreams can become reality or vanish away into the shivering winds. It is important to maintain hope when life is crumbling around you and freedom is what humans strive for in order to execute what they please during their existence on earth. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, is a clear example of freedom combined with hope, illustrated by the characters of Andy Dufresne and Red. Andy, like Red, never loses hope of leaving prison; furthermore they gain a sense of freedom when departing from Shawshank. Having beliefs, in addition to fighting for what you believe is right are virtues that help you to strive for success which ultimately, lets you reach for freedom and hope.
During the film Shawshank Redemption there is a very prominent theme of hope. Shawshank Redemption demonstrates positive and negative ways in which the main characters Andy, Brooks, Tommy and Red display hope. Through out the movie Frank Darabont gives us an insight to how each character connects to the theme of hope. Each character connects differently to hope. For example andy persevering through digging the tunnel, Red connects to hope by become friends with Andy, Tommy gets his high school diploma and finally Brook, although institutionalized became accustomed to being the librarian for many years of his life time in Shawshank prison
The Shawshank Redemption is an inspiring story about Andy Dufreine and his efforts to maintain hope in horrible situations. The directors used many effective methods that displayed signs of hope in such a horrible place. Andy maintained hope by distracting his mind and always staying occupied. Andy was also inspired to survive by helping others find hope in life.
Hope is one of Faulkner's favorite spices for cooking his characters. It is perhaps the most human of all emotions in that it is fragile like the body, but at the same time all powerful like the spirit. Lena Grove and Byron Bunch both have an endless amount of hope for the same thing: love they have never received. Hope brought her from Alabama to Mississippi in search of her runaway Lucas. Likewise, hope will carry Byron wherever Lena goes until he can find her love.
In the novel Long Way Gone, Ishmael goes through a lot of pain but hopes that it will end someday. Hope gives the strength to believe that there will be a better day ahead. When Ishmael would feel down, he thought his father’s words which were “ If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen. One’s ambition, when fueled by hope, can cause them to keep going when put in an adverse situation. When this occurs, it leaves a lasting effect on the individuals around them. In the film Shawshank Redemption by Frank Darabont, the main character Andy Dufrense experiences many hardships but perseveres through them using hope. Andy is placed in a situation that is out of his control and loses any hope he has at the beginning. Through the situations he faces, such as his encounters with the sisters, gaining funds for the library, and succeeding in his escape plan from the prison, Andy regains that hope which motivates his ambition to be free. Hope is the expectation and the desire for an event to happen. For many people, having hope is to see a reality with a positive feeling. From hope, faith comes in. Having faith in something unrealistic motivates people to keep moving forward and try the best of their abilities to make something happen. Most of today’s religions, especially Christianity, based most of their doctrine on the faith of salvation from Jesus Christ‘s sacrifice and the hope of living for eternity, if we obey the laws of God in accordance with the Bible.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is extensively a story of hope. Hope is to wish for something with expectation of its fulfilment and to have confidence; trust. This is shown through the themes, issues and the characters in the novel. Atticus represents hope, he is optimist. He is from the higher class and defends the lower class and still has the anticipation to win. The Finch family has hope as Atticus has taught his children to be accepting and have open-minds. Racism and prejudice, give people the hope for change. For one day there be a world that is fair and equal. Hope comes in many shapes and forms, including the children, Atticus, and themes, akin to racism and prejudice, although hope present throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
Hope and perseverance are two characteristics that can inspire just about anyone in almost any situation. Hope is defined (dictionary.com ) as “the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.” Perseverance is “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement .” In The Unexpected Popularity of Dystopian Literature (2016), Finnson states that “The dystopian worlds are bleak, not because they are meant to stand as mere cautionary tales, but because they are designed to display, in sharp relief, the possibility of utopian change even in the darkest of circumstances .” All of these sources combined lead me to not only understand the elements of hope and perseverance in dystopian literature, but to also see them clearly in the dystopian literature that I have read. Within Parable of the Sower and The Road , the aspects of hope and perseverance are very prevalent themes that are shown in both novels in numerous ways and provide key details and symbols throughout the readings .
In both the film and the short story, which involves freedom is when Andy Dufresne approaches the narrator, Red. Andy asks Red, "I wonder if you could get me a rock-hammer."(28) Andy's reason for wanting a rock-hammer is because he was "a rockhound. At least... I was a rockhound. In my old life."(29) Andy states that he would like to be a rockhound again on a limited basis because it gives him the feeling of freedom. This example serves the purposes of both the story's writer and the filmmaker. The story follows characters Red and Andy who serve life sentences in Shawshank Prison. Over many years a strong bond develops, and Andy, wrongly convicted, inspires many at the prison. After Andy escapes, Red decides to follow him upon being granted parole. The story privileges themes of hope, freedom, institutionalisation, friendship, time, and brutality. The film is similar to the novella, however, some aspects differ from the hypotext. Within the novella, Brooks is a minor character, Tommy Williams doesn’t die, and Warden Norton merely retires. Through altering the story, the film modifies the essence of Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption for film audiences and utilises film language to convey meaning. By adding certain scenes, the text takes on stronger themes of hope, institutionalisation and brutality. This draws attention to the themes within the hypotext and thus enhances the parallels between texts.
The “Hope” is optimism. Freedom from hope is freedom to your soul. You can no longer hurt yourself by living. It is hard to believe that being hopeless leads to living, but living is an imprisonment. We try to be the best we can be but does life limit us?
