Every morning when I wake up and walk into the bathroom I see it. A framed piece of paper that reads, “Sexual Assault Hotlines” in bold letters. The paper defines sexual assault and then goes on to list a total of twenty one phone numbers, both on and off campus. One In Four, a rape prevention organization, has found that “One in four college women report surviving rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime” (One In Four). These statistics have remained the same since the study first began in 1980. As a result of sexual assault, victims tend to suffer from depression, anxiety or most commonly, PTSD. While it is hard to say that sexual assault will completely cease to exist, there are steps we can take to lower the statistics that go far beyond trying to educate people on the topic with lengthy online courses and seminars. In order to reduce the risk of sexual assault colleges should provide more security, adequate lighting, and make rape statistics known in order to take the subject seriously.
The University of California, Riverside has many honorable qualities like its diversity and scientific research. With that said, there are also certain flaws to the school, and I am not just talking about the parking situation. The school rates at a C when it comes to safety on the college review website, Niche. Security seems to be nonexistent on campus, besides the student volunteers who walk around in bright yellow shirts and who could realistically only do so much. Granted, there is a police station about a minute off campus, but they do not really seem to be that big of help either. In fact, there are twenty one emails from the University of California Police Department sitting in my inbox that all end with, “UCPD officers...

...or punished. Sexual assault should be treated as serious as any other crimes, because that is what it is, a crime.
These proposals do not strike me as unattainable. Some could say that colleges simply do not have the money to pay for security or lights, but that seems unlikely. UCR alone could easily afford to spend a few bucks to make the campus safer. We are talking about the school that must make a good earning on food trucks, coffee shops, dining commons and parking. Whatever the solution may be, the real goal if it all is to make others feel safe enough to speak up. Currently, victims tend to stay quiet over fear of being branded a liar, or feeling like the incident was their fault. When in reality, it is not their fault. It is ours. Simply telling college students “rape is bad, do not do it” is not enough and we know it, so why put the solutions off any longer?

Alcohol and Sexual Assault - It's Time to Stop Sex Bias Essay

- Alcohol and Sexual Assault - It's Time to Stop Sex Bias If we are serious about sexual assault, we should reject principles that perplex us when honestly applied to the problem. Some are now advising us to accept, as a guide to personal responsibility and the prevention of sexual assault, the intoxication principle: an intoxicated person cannot consent to sex. So should we accept it. If so, how shall we apply it to Jack and Jill, who had sex while both were intoxicated. According to this principle, neither Jack nor Jill consented to sex, which is perplexing about which, if either, has been assaulted....   [tags: Argumentative Persuasive]
