The values and believes in 1930 or completely different than our present-day values beliefs and attitudes. Money talks! When it comes to money it plays a huge role in the story the big sleep. Money will do everything in the story. If you had money you had everything. You are guaranteed power, wealth, success, and much more. Little did they know that the money they had brought corruption, just like Marlowe says, "I would rather prefer being poor and underpaid if it means I can keep my own moral" The biggest difference with the society we live in today is that many people who are rich and wealthy and successful don 't really show it. Yes we will have a show off here and there in the streets, but in reality all the rich people live a normal life. Sexuality is the biggest theme and problem in the story the big sleep. A good example would be Philip Marlowe. He 's a tall handsome guy who loves to smoke and drink booze constantly and get into fights. Let 's not forget how he likes to treat women. He 's not into slap woman and treat them like what we would call a "hoe". The time we live in today men don 't treat women like they did in the story the big sleep. It 's seems like it 's getting way better than it used to be, today when you go on social media you see the man treating the woman like a real queen. You didn 't see any of that in the big sleep, the big sleep is more as the manual everything in the woman or the hoe of the man and have to do whatever they say. "That 's what it is. Kissing is nice, but your father didn 't hire me to sleep with you" (135) this quote shows you how different it was in 1930. On the surface the story is about love but underneath it is about the decay of society’s morals and how the American dream is a fantasy, only money and power matter. Money, power, and dreams relate to each other by way of three of the characters in the book, Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom. Gatsby is the dreamer, Daisy cares about money, and Tom desires and needs power. People who have no money dream of money. People who have money want to be powerful. People who have power have money to back them up. Fitzgerald writes this book with disgust towards the collapse of the American society. Also the purposeless existences that many people lived, when they should have been fulfilling their potential. American people lacked all important factors to make life worthwhile.

Novels that are written by pronounced authors in distinct periods can possess many parallels and differences. In fact, if we were to delve further into Zora Neale Hurstons, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Kate Chopin’s novel, The Awakening, we can draw upon many similarities. Now of course there are the obvious comparisons, such as Janie is African American and poor, unlike Edna who is white and wealthy, but there is much more than just ethnicity and materialistic wealth that binds these two characters together. Both novels portray a society in which the rights of women and their few opportunities in life are strictly governed, usually breaking the mold that has been made for them to follow The Cult of True Womanhood. These novels further explore these women’s relationships and emotions, proving that throughout the ages of history women have wanted quite similar things out life. Similarly they interconnect in the fact that the end of the stories are left for interpretation from the reader. Both these women in these novels are being woken up to the world around themselves. They are not only waking up to their own understanding of themselves as women and individuals that are not happy in the domestic world of their peers, but they are also awakening themselves as sexual beings.
In response to Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, I have just one question. Why all the similes? There isn't a single page in the novel that doesn't display this annoying literary device. Everything is "like this" or "like that." It never ends! Similar to decoding a secret message that isn't difficult to understand, but nevertheless tiring due to the overwhelming amount of messages, the novel is frustrating to read. The following analysis acknowledges Chandler's creativity in developing his main character, Philip Marlowe, with his usage of simile. However, the excessive style of the novel creates a dominating force that ultimately leaves the reader unfulfilled at the end.
In conclusion, The Great Gatsby reveals the carelessness and shallowness of the characters in the upper class. Society is totally corrupted and the character’s lives revolve around the money and extravagant lifestyles. All of the characters are surrounded with expensive and unnecessary itms, which in turn, dulls their dream of actual success. Scott F. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel.
