I volunteered at the Activity Center for my Service Learning project. My duties were to watch the kids who participated in the after school program, play with them and help them with their home homework. I really enjoyed interacting with the African-American people and culture. I learned many things from the African-American population I worked with. I learned how the Activity Center staff teaches the after school kids good manners and behavior. I mentioned in one of my service learning journals that the staff was very strict and treated the kids like prisoners, but I came to the realization that maybe that is how they teach the kids discipline. I had the opportunity to be around all the Activity Center kids and interact with them. They were kids just like any other kids. Of course they are kids and sometimes they did misbehave but overall they were really great kids. I noticed that most of the boys want to be more independent of them, but they were such sweet kids.
The Activity Center center has been around since 1955, it was founded during the civil rights movement. I learned that the Activity Center has been dedicated to help families for many years. Corey, one of the volunteers I met there, went to the Activity Center as a kid. The statement on the Activity center states, “For decades the Community Center has served neighboring families, youth, seniors, and the Lincoln community with inclusive ‘social, cultural, education, employment and welfare’ services.” The Community center has been a refuge to many African-American families who have needed financial support through out the years.
The social issues that have affected the African-American race have been their descendants’ past. African-Americans, like...

I really think that having the service learning-project in the Unity and Diversity class is great. In class we have talked about minorites and disadvantaged groups, and volunteering in the minority places has everything to do with our class. The suggestions I have for revising the requirements of the service-learning component in a future class would be to require more theories and concepts into our papers. I think you should require more terms in our papers, so that we look more into our books and notes. Other than adding more concepts into the paper I don’t think anything else should be changed.

My Service Learning Project Essay

- Service Learning For my service learning project I dedicated one hour to selling tickets for the benefited pulled pork dinner with our Cowley Activity Awareness Team (CAAT), and did the rest of my hours by serving at the lunch/dinner. The pulled pork dinner was hosted by ACES, another club at Cowley, and it all the money that was raised went towards a food packaging event in November. My duties in this were to fill up cups with water/tea, serve food, and send out prepared meals to cars. I chose to do this as my service learning project because I wanted to be face to face with the people that were helping us make a difference, and to gain experience with serving....   [tags: selling tickets for the benefit pulled pork dinner]

Essay Leadership Service Report

- As part of our leadership course, we were required to do a service learning project. This project was aimed at giving thought to a social problem that bothered us; one we were passionate about and would like to learn more about and also contribute to finding solutions to. After I thought long and hard about what I am restless about, I concluded I was interested in any social issue that involves children. Whenever there is an opportunity to help children in need I try my best to contribute to it whichever way I can....   [tags: children, service learning project]

Final Evaluation of Service Learning Experience for Project SHINE Essay

- ... The room we were assigned was not equipped for the amount of students we had and kept accumulating. The learners seemed to be fine with the extra chairs in the room and me having to stand for two hours wasn’t too treacherous. I would most definitely recommend this organization to another student interest in service learning. The patience I have grown to understand the value of, relationships built with immigrants, and basic life skills created for immigrants could not have been obtained anywhere else....   [tags: immigrants, refugees, english, learners]

From Pullout to Inclusion in a Service-Learning Project Essay

- From Pullout to Inclusion in a Service-Learning Project Introduction Service-learning is no mystery to those who have been working with English Language Learners in the United States, who are often marginalized immigrants and refugees, and who for linguistic and cultural reasons are misunderstood. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) professionals are frequently their mouthpiece, if not their advocates. As advocates of these “other” cultures and languages (who generally support bilingual education), we are seen as a kind of pariah perpetuating the immigration and “illegal alien problem.” Not surprisingly, given the increase of immigrants and refugees in the U.S....   [tags: Teaching Education Research]

Community Service Project Reflection Essay

- The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience. I performed my community service with Habitat for Humanity. The non‐profit organization chooses the applicant that purchases the house and Habitat only charges them the cost of the materials....   [tags: Volunteer Work, Service Learning]

The Importance of Service Learning Essay

- When a woman approached Benjamin Franklin following the concluding session of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in the fall of 1787 and asked what sort of government the delegates had come up with, Franklin famously replied: "A republic, madam, if you can keep it." The relevance of that notable statement transcended centuries and applied itself not only to national politics. The People’s participation in maintaining an agreeable government depends on a collective activism regarding both state and local civic affairs....   [tags: Service Learning Teaching Education]

Essay about Values of Service Learning

- Service learning is integrated within academic courses in several community colleges, although, other colleges have yet to integrate service learning. The communities whom the students serve have acknowledged the effect because of the value it consists for students.
