John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” (1820). A servant leader is defined as one who serves first. These leaders “focus primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong” (Greenleaf Center, 2016, p. 1). I find Servant Leadership to be the most appealing because it mirrors the leadership of Jesus. Jesus lived a life full of servanthood even though he is the only one who deserves to be served. Thus, he is the ultimate example of a servant leader because he always “modeled the true servant style of leadership” (Got Questions Ministries, 2016, p.1). When his disciples were bickering over selfish desires, “the Lord incarnate, bent down and washed their feet, teaching them the true measure of leading by first serving others (John 13:12–17)”. Jesus lived a life of servanthood. Everywhere he went, he served. Ultimately, “Paul reminds us that our attitude is to be like Christ’s in that we consider others better than ourselves and do nothing out of vanity or selfishness” yet, rather meet the needs and interests of others (Philippians 2:3–4, New Living Translation) (Got Questions Ministries, 2016, p.1). Jesus stated, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:26–28, New Living Translation). Thus, according to Jesus, “all leadership should be servant leadership” because “a servant leader seeks to invest himself in the lives of his people so that, as a whole, the church community is challenged to grow to be mo...

Ultimately, the purpose of leadership is to serve people and to show them that they can and will make a difference. This by definition is Servant Leadership and I find it appealing because it forces me to get outside of myself. It forces me to put the needs of others before my own. Thus, Servant Leadership 's goal is to simply meet the needs of people because that is what Jesus did. He met the needs they did not even know they had. Deuteronomy 15:11 states, “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land” (New International Version). Servant Leadership forces me to live that life God has called me to.
