Sermon (Old Testament Passage)
Prayer:
Text: Deuteronomy 11
Focus Text: Deuteronomy 11: 1, “Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statues, and his judgments, and his commandments, always (KJV).
Topic: Remembering the keys to obedience.
Message: Let’s look at the word obedience. It means the condition or quality of being obedient; the act or an instance of obeying, dutiful or submissive behavior. This is what Moses is talking to the people of Israel about in this passage, not about the war or military matters they were about to face with the Canaanites, but about their duty to God. Now that they were to enter new and more pleasant territory, Moses repeats the Law to them as a sign of good things to come. …show more content…

Israel wouldn’t listen to the judges, even began building also worshipping other gods (golden calf). The Lord also let the enemies test Israel’s idolatry, constant complaining, their impatience also their sexual behaviors. Today, we are no different from Israel, God gives us all the choice to live by His statues. By reviewing God’s promises also His mighty acts in history, we can learn about His character. We come to know God more intimately through understanding how he has acted in the past. This allow us to avoid mistakes in our own lives through learning from Israel’s past failures. In other words, God is like our parents, He gives us the path to right and wrong along with the consequence.
With this in mind, we should ask God what does He except of me? What keys to obedience do I need to keep in my heart and live by? Moses answered these questions for us when he told Israel in Deuteronomy 10: 12-13, 1.) To fear God (have reverence for him). 2.) Live in a way that please Him. 3.) Love Him. 4.) All obedience to God starts with love. A person who does not love God cannot obey God. For this reason, Moses reiterates the call to love. Everything that happens in the history of Israel had been for the purpose of motivating the people to love God with their whole hearts. Submission to Him with actions, words and thought. It is the same today with obedience to God and his Word. He specifies several great works He has done for us, giving us his Son Jesus that we may live
