What Are The Five Senses?

1341 Words3 Pages

Each person has five senses organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin) that take in information from your environment and send it to your brain. Your brain then processes the information and tells your body how to respond. Your nervous system is responsible for ignoring unnecessary data. Sight is the capability of the eyes to focus and detect images, hearing or audition is the sense of sound perception, taste refers to the capability to detect the taste of substances such as food, smell refers to the capability of detecting odors and touch responds to pressure receptors. There are about 6 million specialized cells just for smelling. Separate senses with their own receptor organs, taste and smell are nonetheless intimately entwined. This …show more content…

The general senses are pain, temperature, touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception. Receptors for those sensations are distributed throughout the body. Special senses are limited to the head, such as the ears and eyes. A sensation is how receptors transmit information to the brain and perception is how the brain processes that information. The five types of receptors are chemoreceptors (sensitive to changes in chemical concentrations), pain receptors (sensitive to tissue damage), thermo receptors (sensitive to temperature change), mechanoreceptors (sensitive to mechanical forces), and photoreceptors (sensitive to …show more content…

Rods are responsible for vision at low light levels they do not mediate color vision, and have a low spatial acuity. Rods are more sensitive to light then cones. Cones are active at higher light levels and are capable of color vision and are responsible for high spatial acuity resulting in sharp images. Rhodopsin is the light sensitive pigment in rods. Rhodopsin molecules break down into a protein called opsin and an organic compound called retinal which manufactures vitamin A. Iodines are the light sensitive pigments of cones. They contain different proteins than the
