Why many people will see seeking professional psychological help as a last option? There are many people who could benefit from receiving professional services but not all of the people would willing to seek professional psychological help (Corrigan, 2004). Based on Corrigan (2004), the stigmatization has been shown to be a crucial barrier to people who are seeking professional psychological help. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of both self-stigmatization and perceived public stigmatization associated with attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help through two main analyses.
The finding of the study demonstrated that there is a moderate negative significant correlation between self-stigmatization and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. Furthermore, the result of the correlation analysis showed there was a significant negative small correlation between perceived public stigmatization and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. Moreover, the result of the standard multiple regression analysis suggested that self-stigmatization predicted attitudes toward seeking professional psychological. Yet, perceived public stigmatization did not make a special contribution to the prediction of attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help.
These results were consistent with previous findings; for example, Vogel, Wade and Hackler (2007) studied the relationship between both self-stigmatization and perceived public stigmatization and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. Additionally, four traits of personality that included Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism and Openness being found that there was positive correlated with attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. Thus, future research is needed to answer one question that this study failed to answer definitively: Whether Conscientiousness would predict attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help among undergraduates. This study could help better understanding in the relationship between personality traits, stigmatization with attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help among undergraduates.
