Introduction
This paper will delve into the complex nature involving the seed corn industry. Looking at multiple aspects from producers of seed corn and how the production process has changed over the years to reflect customer demand. Many times the major producers of seed corn are very involved in the marketing and selling of the product and we will discuss this relationship.
The product life cycle of different technologies and products offered by these major seed corn producers will be viewed in depth as its evolution has played a major role on both the marketing strategy used and the agricultural industry as a whole.
Few people not directly involved in the production, buying, or selling aspect of the seed corn industry understand its evolution and the increased competition. Looking at the shifts in market share has shown that larger companies continue to grow at an increasing rate. This could could result in the end of smaller seed corn sellers. While discussing the purchasing of seed corn with a farmer we will see the influence certain selling tactics have on their decisions.
The changes in competition have been plentiful over the years in the seed corn industry and we will delve into the complexities involving these changes and the results of these changes on the industry. There are three main points revolving around the change in the seed corn industry today.
1.) Unaware to most is the high competitiveness involved in the seed market today.
2.) Grower choice is increasing as technologies and innovation revolutionize the product choices.
3.) Farmers have benefited immensely from the changes in the seed corn industry.

In the New York Times article “When a Crop Becomes a King”, author Michael Pollan argues there is an overproduction of corn that does more harm than it does good. He writes this in response to a farm bill signed by then President Bush to increase the budget for corn production which caused much controversy. Pollan uses an infuriated and frustrated tone in order to convince American consumers that corn has taken over their environment and economy. Michael Pollan uses rhetorical strategies to challenge conventional views of corn and to argue against additional corn production.

In doing so, the industry has effectively implanted an industrialized system which is, in part, a reason for its ability to offer ‘abundance, accessibility, and affordability’; the industry has been equally prosperous in cultivating and maintaining such a system. America’s agriculture has grown in scale, fully utilized biotechnology, and mechanized, which leads to questions for the consumer as well as demands for the industry leaders. This is due to the symbiotic relationship Walmart has with its consumers, they are able to offer lower prices in more locations and consumers desire affordability and proximity. Despite the obvious dominance of the economy by Walmart, less conventional producers and consumers are present and on the rise.
Currently, the United States is the largest producer of corn in the world. In 2010, it produced 32% of the world’s corn crop. Corn is grown on approximately 400,000 U.S. farms, showing the importance of corn in the United States’ diets. Farmers were enticed to eliminate any stock they had for Indian cotton seeds and in return purchase the premium-priced cotton seeds from Monsanto Company. Upon entry into this agreement, their initial farmer’s union went into bankruptcy. Research has shown that, while initial results indicate higher production, the contrary becomes apparent. Over a short time, the crop yield of genetically modified cotton becomes five times less than their Indian cotton production. Nevertheless, since their union fell apart, it becomes hard for these farmers to revert back into their initial cotton
The 1920’s were the singularly most influential years of farming in our country. The loss of farms following the war, and new agricultural practices resulted in the dawn of modern agriculture in our country. The shift from small family to big corporation during this time is now the basis for how our society deals with food today. Traditional farming in the 1920’s underwent a series of massive transitions following WWI as the number of farms decreased and the size of farms increased.
In my previous paper I did my research on the history, production, and trade of cane sugar that was mostly produced in the United States. On our study abroad trip to Mexico we saw some sugar cane fields from the road, but we did get to tour any of the farms or see any sugar processing factories. So I was thinking to myself how I am going to write a paper on sugar cane in Mexico if I never experienced any of it while I was down there. Fortunately I found a topic that was very close to home and related to some of the agriculture in Mexico as well. While visiting the Trade Management Services, Inc., we met with the Iowa trade representative, Jose Antonio Jimenez. Jose mentioned some things about the controversy with the United States and Mexico with the imported high fructose corn syrup into Mexico and the effects it has had on the sugar markets and the producers. Since Iowa is the number one grower of corn in the United States, and number one in producing high fructose corn syrup, it is a major issue for Iowans because of the great market share we have with Mexico. In this essay I will discuss some of the issues with the trade barriers, taxes, and tariffs the two countries have opposed on each other.
Selling corn in massive quantity can lead to a greater profit. An ear of corn may averages about eight-hundred kernels in sixteen rows and a pound of corn consists of approximately 1,300 kernels. One-hundred bushels of corn makes approximately 7,280,000 kernels. Every year, a single U.S. Farmer may provides food and fiber for 129 people in the U.S. and 32 overseas. In the U.S., corn production is 2 times that of any other crop. Over 55% of Iowa’s corn goes to foreign markets and the rest is used in other parts of the United States of America.
In recent history, farming in America has changed dramatically, and Naylor’s farm is representative of many in the American Corn Belt. Though it began growing a variety of crops and keeping livestock too, Naylor now only plants corn and soybeans. In Naylor’s grandfather’s days, the farm fed the whole family with just enough left over for twelve others. Now, Naylor indirectly feeds an estimated 129 people, but this does not mean his farm is any more successful. In fact, Naylor’s farm cannot financially support his family.
These three companies have all but either acquired or eliminated their smaller competitors. The giants compete for the leading fast food chain’s contracts, in turn only benefitting the restaurants and increasing their profits (Schlosser 116). The potato industry has become an, “oligopsony- a market in which a small number of buyers exerts power over a large number of sellers,” (Schlosser 117). The potato farmers of Idaho face as Schlosser recounts, “pressure to either get bigger- or get out if the business,” (Schlosser 117). “Over the past twenty-five years, Idaho has lost about half of its potato farmers.
Food Inc. directed by Robert Kenner gives viewers an eye opening experience to the politics of the industrial food manufacturing and processing system. Kenner is an award winning documentary director and producer since the 1970’s. He has perfected his craft in Food Inc. by allowing the viewer to better understand where processed food comes from and the corporations that own it all. The film takes a look into three of the most popular goods of corn, beef and pork. There becomes a better understanding of the corn industry and how almost all processed food can be traced back to the genetic modification of corn. Beef can be tied into this scenario with the newer practice of feeding cattle corn. The film takes some interest in explaining how corn

People have depended on agriculture for years as the primary source of getting food. We have developed all kinds of ways to manipulate nature so what we can produce higher yield crops, more nutritious crops, bigger crops, crops that withstand cold, and farming equipment that allows us to manufacture these crops with relative ease. Why then are there five billion people being malnourished and forty thousand children dying each day from hunger? It seems as though world hunger is more a result of the lack of distributing the food properly than the lack of quantity. agriculture has turned into a high profit business and biotech companies like Monsanto are constantly trying to come up with better and more efficient ways of farming. Are they doing this to try to solve the world hunger crisis, or merely to make a profit?
