Writing Center Observation # 1

- Writing Center Observation #1 I visited the Writing Center on Tuesday, September 27 to work on a book reflection paper for my religion elective. I met with Caitlin Ellis (Caity). When I arrived, Caity greeted me by name, which I appreciated because it demonstrated that she had prepared for our appointment by taking the time to read over the appointment notes. Caity set the initial tone for our appointment through her friendly greeting. Although I was a little nervous at first (I always am when sharing my writing with new people), Caity created an open space for learning in which we could both be confident in our respective roles as writer and reader....   [tags: Writing, English-language films, Paper, The Point]

Experiences in the Writing Center

- Experiences in the Writing Center When I started to work at the Writing Center, I had about eleven years of experience in tutoring English as a foreign language to non-native English speakers in Germany. The experience I had gained from that proved to be very helpful. Before you can address the problems in writing, like any other problem, it is very important to get to know the writer. If you can build a bridge between the two individuals, who should work together in a tutoring session, it is a lot easier to discuss problems and find solutions....   [tags: Personal Narrative Writing]

Tutors Theorizing the Writing Center

- Central to the theorizing that is current in writing center scholarship is the concept of collaboration between tutors and students. Because of the overarching framework of social constructivism that currently drives theorizing in a multitude of disciplines—e.g., composition, literature, history, sociology, anthropology—it is not surprising that writing center scholars also use this framework to question the kind of knowledge that tutors create in tutorial sessions (see Grimm 1999, Murphy 1995, Carino 1995, Hobson 1994)....   [tags: Education Learning Papers]

Grammar and the Role of Writing Center Tutors as Teachers of Grammar

- Grammar and the Role of Writing Center Tutors as Teachers of Grammar Communication in any form requires a protocol. The evolution of language from sounds into words is proof of that. People recognized that in order for two people to understand each other, they must have a common code that will allow each one to transmit and receive signals accurately. If the word “red” signified two different colors to two different people, for example, then there would be a breakdown of communication. Language has grown complex over time and in its current form, it enables users to communicate with precision and nuance....   [tags: Teaching Writing Grammer Education]

Experience Attending College at an Old Age

- Reflective Essay Attending college at an old age, writing an effective paper is a formidable task I am trying to overcome. Although English was taught in my native country, there were no proper guidelines on writing a paper; hence most submitted essays were mostly results of brainstorming and “free writing”. It only makes sense, following this rather obvious train of thought, that when a beaten down people wish to preserve their struggling voices for a following group to hear, they write about them so they can be heard.
