The Mixture Of Modernization With Historical Values

- The Mixture of Modernization with Historical Values Western values brought with the slave trade, globalization, and colonization infiltrate the ideas of marriage, sexuality, and intimacy in African societies. With “modernization” African historical values became distorted and more of the populace forgot their importance. “Modernization” did not help women as much as men. The opportunities for women are there, but their socioeconomic position and the African patriarchal society prohibits many from easy access to the job and educational opportunities....   [tags: Sociology, Marriage, Village, City]

Mixture and Compound Differences

- Mixture and Compound Differences 1 One difference between mixtures and compounds is that compounds have a certain composition as opposed to mixtures that can be varied. Chemical compounds are made up of at least two elements that are bonded together in a fixed mass ratio that can only be split apart by chemical means. And a mixture is a substance created by merging at least two different materials with no chemical reaction. Also compounds can only be separated if they are destroyed. But the elements in mixtures can be physically separated from each other easily....   [tags: Chemistry ]

Transformation and Mixture in Moby-Dick

- Classroom discussions of Moby-Dick often result in a heightened awareness of Melville’s depictions of duality in nature; for example, the contrasting sky and sea respectively represent heaven and hell and the foul-smelling whale in Chapter 92 produces a fragrant and valuable substance called ambergris. But interpreting Melville’s Moby-Dick only as an exercise in duality limits the scope of this complex novel. Melville’s contemporary, Margaret Fuller, also seems aware of the confining notion of duality and states in Woman in the Nineteenth Century: Male and female represent the two sides of the great radical dualism....   [tags: Moby Dick Melville]

Our Experiment to Separate a Mixture of Organic Compounds

By using a separatory funnel, two to three extractions of an aqueous-organic mixture is enough to methodically transfer the organic acid (benzoic acid) from the organic solvent (diethyl ether) to the aqueous phase. Initially, the organic carboxylic acid becomes a charged species after it is deprotonated by a base like sodium hydroxide, producing a carboxylic salt. After completing the extraction, an acid, such as hydrochloric acid, is added to the basic aqueous solution causing the sodium carboxylate salt to change back to the default carboxylic acid, which will precipitate out of...   [tags: acid, melting point, reaction]

The plants were harvested, defoliated and stems were crushed to extract sweet juice from it. The bagasse obtained was immediately cold washed to remove the free sugars present on it (Hou-min Chang, Richard Phillips et al. 2013). It was then dried in a hot air oven at 500C for 72 hours to obtain constant dry mass. The dried bagasse was chopped using scissors to 1-2 cm long pieces and powdered to small particles using a blender-grinder (Homeland Housewares, LA, USA)....   [tags: hemicellulose, pentose sugar, sweet sorghum]

Chemical Makeup And Acid Base Reactions

- Exaction is where a solute is transfer from solvent A to solvent B (Ketcha, 47). A possible method to do this is changing the chemical makeup by using acid-base reactions (Ketcha, 42). The acid-base reactions change the solubility of the solute. If the original solute is ionic and is dissolvable is solvent A but not B, then adding the acid HCl would change the solute to its conjugate acid. The resulting acid would then be soluble in B but not A. To revert the change, just add the base NaOH to the solution....   [tags: Solvent, Solubility, Chemistry, Solution]

Chemistry : The Purification Of Substances

- Organic compounds are naturally permeated with impurities that can possibly pose problems in organic synthesis reactions. Therefore, an important part of organic chemistry lab is in the purification of substances. Unit three was a technique experiment in distillation, and its purpose was in the introduction of two types of distillation methods, although there are various other types. The main purpose of the lab was learning how to distinguish the appropriate time to use either of the distillation methods and learning how to interpret the analysis tools employed to determine the purity of a distillate....   [tags: Distillation, Fractional distillation]

The Lab : An Organic Layer

- The lab begins with reflux of the reaction to form an ester followed by several extractions from an organic layer. To purify the ester the compound is dried by gravity filtration with a drying agent, distilled using simple distillation, and recrystallized. The aldol condensation is reacted in a test tube and the solute is collected via vacuum filtration and recrystallized. The esterification procedure was performed first. To begin the lab, the heating mantle was set at the 6 setting, and the hot plate heat was turned on to low....   [tags: Distillation, Laboratory glassware, Solvent]

How The Enzyme Catecholase From Potato Extract Reacts

- Our hypothesis is that we believe, the test tube that has potato extract alone in it will have the darkest brown color, thus it will have the highest absorbency. The reason we believe this hypothesis is true is because, darker the color of the mixture, more light will be absorbed and also because it did not receive any pH which can make the mixture lose it’s ability the catalyze reaction. This experiment is designed to investigate and compare, how the enzyme catecholase from potato extract reacts and shows different absorbency when mixed with catechol, and different pH buffer to when it just has the catecholse present in it....   [tags: PH, Buffer solution, Acid dissociation constant]

- Activation of Zero-Valent Magnesium using Acetic Acid for the Degradation of Triacetone Triperoxide in Ethanol Abstract Triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a cyclic peroxide, is an explosive frequently used by terrorists and amateur chemists due to the ease of synthesis and the availability of reagents. A degradation method for degrading TATP in ethanol (EtOH) was proposed using an activated, zero-valent magnesium (ZVMg) system. Different acids were tested to determine their effectiveness in activating Mg for the degradation of TATP, and short chain carboxylic acids, particularly acetic acid, were observed to have the greatest effect on the TATP degradation rate....   [tags: Chemistry]

Extraction is conducted by shaking the solution with the solvent, until two layers are formed. One layer can then be separated from the other. If the separation does not happen in one try, multiple attempts may be needed. The experiment was conducted in three parts: Part A of the experiment consisted of extracting caffeine from an aqueous solution; Part B consisted of using three different compounds: benzoic acid, succinic acid, and sodium benzoate; and the last part of the experiment consisted of using a solid...   [tags: Solubility, Chemistry, Erlenmeyer flask, Solvent]

As all the graphs contained outliers, and hence, scatter, this indicates that random errors were present. Such errors may result from the inconsistent masses of the Alka Seltzer tablets.
