A life changing experience can appear trivial to others but has a profound psychological, emotional and sometimes physical effect on the person undergoing the change.

    Life changing events can belong to various categories:

    • An action – a high-risk one such as skydiving or climbing a mountain, a relatively nondescript one like participating in a school debate, an altruistic one such as helping a homeless person or visiting an orphanage, disaster-affected area or war hospital
    • A decision –to start a business, to move on from a negative situation, to ask for forgiveness, to change jobs, homes or cities, letting go of people, objects or memories, getting married or divorced, leaving an abusive relationship or getting into one, giving birth to or adopting a child, joining the military
    • An encounter – with someone who inspires or motivates you, a favorite writer or celebrity, a deep conversation with friend, neighbour, family member or even a random stranger
    • A loss – of a job, a home or a loved one, a pet, a significant amount of money, becoming disabled
    • A child leaving home
    • Retirement

    Life changing events can be positive or negative, depending on how you deal with them, but they will definitely shape the rest of your life. Sometimes we embrace and welcome our life changing event, other times we are thrust into it with no choice or warning, dealing with it as best as we can. These events can be sources of wisdom and strength and bring forth the best in you; but they can also crush you with grief and hardship if you let them.
