I normally go to the public library to read the materials and complete homework for this class. I would prefer to use the school’s library, but unfortunately I feel more comfortable here. I completed my after project using a 5th grade girl. She goes by the name of Nevaeh Jenkins. She is 10-years-old and attends Pope Elementary in Arlington. She is an only child. First, I introduced myself to the student and her parent by stating my name and giving her a little bit of background information about my project (e.g., what school I go to, what my major is, what the project consists of, and how long it would take for us to complete the assignment). Afterwards, I provided her with a notebook and a pen to write with. I asked her to write her full name, grade, and the date at the top of a sheet of paper. I used my laptop to call out the lower grade level spelling words to her. As I called out the words, I repeated them and also used some in a sentence format. I tried to decrease the amount of dead time by keeping a consistent flow of announcing words. After the spelling test, Nevaeh and I chatted for a little bit longer to get to know each other. I learned that she hated reading and writing. I also learned that the school that she goes to is where my younger sister is student teaching this fall. Wow! What a coincidence! I was surprised. She told me that she recognized my last name from working with my sister and little did I know she was one of her gym students. (-: As far as the lower spelling test score goes, she did okay. She missed 9 out of 25, which to me is not bad for a fifth grader. I really did not know what to expect. After the test was completed, she wanted to know what grade she made. So, I calculated it and came up with a 64, ...

...e scoring sheet, so I wrote them out to the side and placed an asterisk by them. This will alert anyone, who reviews this project that the spelling was not listed for these words, which means that my conclusion of her spelling stages may or may not be 100 percent accurate. This may be happening in schools today. Teachers may not be able to figure out or clearly see, where a child is in the learning process by using a single standardized test and scoring sheet. As you can see, from the results of my experiment. Please keep this in mind as an educator. Sometimes, you will have to use more than just a testing format to determine the performance level of your students; especially, since not all students think alike. Be open minded and do not conform to one method of performance evaluation. Tests do not always give the most accurate feedback on one’s performance level.
