At the beginning of each school year students and parents receive the student handbook which includes the school’s dress code. Most students hate the dress code because it prohibits them from wearing certain things to school. Schools feel the need to have and enforce the dress code because they want students to be in a safe learning environment while avoiding distractions. However, it seems that girls are usually the ones getting dress coded for what they wear while boys seem to get away with more. Just about anything a girl wears can be considered distracting or inappropriate by the school when it should not. Although the school dress code was made to eliminate distractions in the classroom setting, it mainly focuses on what girls wear while …show more content…
Girls have to wear shorts that are a certain length and shirts that do not show too much cleavage. It seems that if a girl gets harassed by a guy it will be her fault which is not true. Whatever a girl wears does not give a guy permission to disrespect her in any way but schools do not seem to understand this or just do not want to deal with it. In an article to Times magazine Laura Bates, founder of Everyday Sexism Project, writes “The problem is often compounded by a lack of any attempt to discipline boys for harassing behavior, which drives home the message that it is the victim’s responsibility to prevent.” Schools need to stop acting like the girls are the only ones to blame and start changing their policies in order to teach the boys that their actions are not …show more content…
When it gets hot girls want to wear things like shorts and tank tops but get in trouble because their clothing do not meet the school’s guidelines. The schools should understand that when it gets hot girls want to wear clothing that will help them stay cool. Instead school staff and teachers check to see if shorts are the appropriate length by making sure they are at least to the girls’ fingertips. However, this is not fair because there are girls who have long arms that reach almost to their knees. Also girls cannot wear tank tops or any type of shirt that shows their bra straps since it could make the male students and teachers feel uncomfortable. But doesn’t everyone know that girls wear bras? The males should not feel uncomfortable about something that is commonly known and schools should not be favoring the boys over the
Do you expect a five-year old boy to be distracted by what a five-year old girl is wearing? Of course not. If you were to ask a child or teen what they thought about school, they would probably say that they dislike school for a multitude of reasons, two of them being: a misogynistic dress code and the stress of balancing schoolwork with the expectations of society. The American educational system is inadequate compared to countries like Finland in which the dress code is nonexistent and the curriculum is more flexible to human needs; it is imperative that we come together to assure Dr. Anna Hinton, director of innovation and improvement, that she can enhance the broken educational system.
Varying Issues Corresponding to the School Dress Code Shelby A. Scholle Newbury Park High School Abstract Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions. Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality causing students to conform, sexist ideas in the form of punishment and how forms of clothing causes a distraction, and influencing rape culture. Costs for an advanced educational environment, positive, and negative effects will be explored within this paper to determine whether or not the dress code is necessary for an advanced learning environment or limiting the student's ability to express themselves.
Web. 18 Feb. 2016. In this article, Bates argues that today’s school dress codes are sexist and leave a lasting impression on young girls. Bates explains that there are several cases where girls are being punished for their adolescent bodies being distractions to boys. Also, it can teach a young girl that her body is dangerous and that a young boy automatically has the right to sexually diminish and harass adolescent girls in schools.
It has been recognizable that the administration and school board are trying all they can to make Pen Argyl Area High School a place people would like coming to. However, there have been some controversies going around the last couple of years. One of the biggest controversies have been the dress code that the school board has come up with. There have been many changes to the things students can and can not wear over the past four years. Students must adhere to a very strict dress code, and if they do not, they will have to face consequences. Students and other members of the school district area have seen some flaws in this. The Pen Argyl Area School District dress code should be less strict because it is gender biased, fewer people will get in trouble, and it will benefit students and parents.
First of all, if students want to attend class in the clothes that make them feel comfortable, then they should be able to do so. In the 2015 article on The Atlantic on The Sexism of School Dress Codes, stating that "Many of these protests have criticized the dress codes as sexist in that they unfairly target girls by body-shaming and blaming them for promoting sexual harassment. Documented cases show female students being chastised by school officials, sent home, or barred from attending events like prom. "
Us girls feel personally attacked by the dress code policies simply because even if so much as a centimeter of skin from under our jeans, or a portion of my bra strap is showing we get sent to the office and we are given the lecture of needing to keep a better image of ourselves, and being more conservative about our bodies. Well from coming from a girl's perspective, we feel like we have to bow down to the boys just because they think inappropriate thoughts if any part of a girls skin is showing. Well, we have society and adults to thank for this simply because when boys are caught doing something they aren't supposed to do or watch something they are not supposed to be watching, adults simply say, “Oh boys will be boys.”. Now adults have conditioned boys to think that thinking these thoughts is a way of life and that it is okay to think them just because they are boys. God made us girls the way we are for a reason, why are we letting guys discriminate us women in such a way that we basically have to dress like a boy in order to keep them from thinking these sinful
In a lot of schools in the United States young girls were send home to change their clothes, because those clothes were seen as a distraction. Girls have been sent home for wearing a top, which was showing a bra strap, for wearing a v-neck, for wearing yoga pants, or for wearing make up. Meanwhile boys often wear their trousers revealing their boxer shorts. However, there is not one single record of a boy being send home to change because he was seen as a distraction. In addition in most cases the boys in the classroom were not even distracted by the appearance of their female classmate, but the in most cases also male teacher decided that the appearance was distracting. This is a perfect example of how girls are already sexualised at a young age by men, who are twice their age. One may argue that a teacher, who is also a father of three children, should not see a bra strap that is showing because a girl decided to wear a top during a hot summer day as a
When reading student handbooks there is always a page (or more) dedicated to the dress code rules. At first glance they seem like common sense. Until you notice that most of the regulations seem to target what girls wear. While many of the regulations are used in gender neutral terms they are applied to articles of clothing that is usually considered for girls and is all about limiting the things that even remotely show off the female form. These regulations tell girls that they need to be ashamed of their bodies and they are a distraction.
Schools typically justify their dress codes by maintain that it’s important to keep the classroom free of any distractions, however, that language actually reinforces the idea that women’s bodies are inherently tempting to men and it’s their responsibility to cover themselves up.
Students were walking around the school during passing period, when a teacher stopped them. The teacher told them that their shorts were too short because it did not go past their fingertips. The students were not wearing inappropriate shorts at all. In fact, the shorts were longer than some other students in their grade. At Hebron Middle Middle School, the dress code rules are fair for some, but not fair for others.
Anne K. Ream, an advocate for women’s issues says, “It’s not a lack of female modesty but a sense of male entitlement that leads to sexual violence. And the idea that we women can change men’s behavior by changing our clothes is not only disconcerting, it has been debunked. As millions of women know all too well, no one ever avoided a rape by wearing a longer skirt”. The dress codes and sexual education in schools is what leads to the negative thinking. It doesn’t matter if a girl is wearing a short skirt or has had sex before, she shouldn’t be seen as a slut, and if she says no to any sexual advances, it means
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. Dress codes are important for a strong and healthy learning environment and is also reducing violence in many schools around the country.
We see stories Social media has more stories of girls being sent home because of dress code violations. Maybe the problem isn’t the students, but dress codes in general.
