Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.

The general definition of bullying is, “… [This] states that a person is being bullied when he or she is exposed repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons” (Aluede et al. 3). There are two different variations in bullying type such as direct and indirect bullying (Aluede et al. 3). Direct bullying is publicly attacking someone, whereas, someone who harasses their victim by exiling them socially is a form of indirect bullying (Aluede et al. 3). A lot of people think that the typical bullying situation is physical, but it can go beyond that (“Verbal Bullying” 1) Bullying can be put into four different areas of harassment; physical, verbal, emotional, and cyber bullying (“Teenage Bullying” 1).

Physical bullying is one of the easiest types of harassment to identify (Aluede et al. 5). Bullies use physical force to beat, kick, or even damage someone’s property, “[Including] books, clothing, or lunch money” (“Physical Bullying” 1). Physical harassment is typically found more in the male gender than in females, but they are still able to portray these crimes or become victims themselves (“Physical Bullying” 1). They could have several reasons to bully their victims, such as, to be in control or to be acknowledged (“Physical Bullying” 1). A p...

... accept bullying” (Business Wire 1). There are laws that have been passed to prevent bullying (“Bullying Statistics” 1). “As of October, 2010, 45 states had bullying laws, while there were no such laws in the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota, with New York being one of the most recent to pass legislation” (“Bullying Statistics” 1).

Bullying has become a real problem in the last decade or two. If there isn’t a stop to these actions done by the bullies then suicides and school shooting are to become more prevalent in the future to come. Everyone should take a stand against these horrible, misunderstood people. “Unless and until programs are instituted to address the seriousness and potential life-threatening bullying that is prevalent in most schools today, the teen suicide rate will undoubtedly increase” (Clarke 1).
