Scholarly and Caring for the Environment Ever wondered why people care so much about how clean the environment needs to be? Well that’s because if people don’t take care of our planet then people wouldn’t be living in a safe healthy environment. In order to keep the environment safe there are things that need to be done like recycling used bottles, papers, trash bags and not throwing trash on the roads. In places like school students create ecofriendly programs to participate in. Being a student and getting involved with the environment can encourage other people to do the same. In the article the author explained that some offices were going paperless and I can relate to that because in my school all the classrooms were paperless. Teachers would remind students to recycle any paper or bottles they had. In order to help remind the students about how important it is to keep the earth clean there would be flyers and drawing about earth and the environment stapled to the walls in the hallways. In school instead of having to use paper plates for lunch the lunch lady would give students their food on trays. The purpose of giving students their food on trays is so that the school can reuse them and not have to keep throwing away plastic plates. The author had good details to help the reader understand what she was trying to say. She explained all the programs the school had and how excited students and staffs were. She also explained how the programs would help the environment stay clean. There is one hundred and eighty days of school and seven hours in each day. Out of the whole year, one day is dictated to the environment and talked about for five hours. On this day, every teacher makes sure that they have their shiny blue and green buckets out right next to the door that they have set out themselves a few days before this special day. That way when the environmentalist comes to visit and starts to show pictures of the recycling bins, no one starts acting clueless. These very important people start explaining the reason for choosing this particular school to give a very important speech about saving earth as well including that prizes will be passed out if all questions are answered correctly at the end. The old Native American proverb that states, “We do not inherit the land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children” really makes me think about my lifestyle and how it is benefiting the Earth. Being sustainable not only means to take care of the planet for my generation but also for future generations. It is my job to care for the planet as best as I can and to help pass on these good habits to my children. The best ways that I can help my environment are composting uneaten food and old vegetables, donating or reusing old clothes, and recycling plastic and paper products.
I have had many experiences that have shaped my interest in becoming a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar. My first experience in relation to the environment and conservation took place my senior year of high school in my AP Environmental Science class. This class influenced my decision to study the environmental sciences. The class covered all systems on Earth, covered the anthropogenic influences on the environment, and covered various conservation methods for sustainable living. It shaped my interest for the program because it brought to my attention all the possibilities for change and conservation, which influenced what I want to do with my life.
One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
In Mr. Kohtz article it was quoted that “The reason we pay for curbside recycling isn’t because it makes economic sense or even environmental sense. It’s because it is convenient and it makes us feel better about the environment”. More importantly is a society where the community follows mandatory recycling programs, are less susceptible to diseases caused by an unclean environment. For example cancer, which is a disease where abnormal cells divide uncontrollably. In addition to the statistics shown in the American Cancer Society, Cancer Facts and Figures for 2014 it was estimated that 585,720 Americans were expected to die from cancer.
When I think of the perfect place, I imagine a cascading waterfall, a vast forest, a stunning mountainside, or a warm sunset on the beach. I look up around me, mesmerized by the vastness of the natural world and breathe in the fresh air. Over the course of my life, I have come to respect the environment and the earth’s natural surroundings in ways that most others do not in the industrialized and technological era of today. Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.

The issue of paper waste is one of the major environmental issues in today’s society. Because paper is so easily found and widely used, many people use it without thinking about where it comes from or where it goes after they have finished using it. Two lunchtimes a week I take part in my school’s Earth Dwellers Recycling Club. I take part in recycling as I feel that I am actually making a difference to the local environment’s current litter pollution issues. By recycling, more pollution is cut down from our school, and hopefully, our school fraternity will look up to our example and perhaps be inspired to do the same in their future years. I also hoped to gain skills such as teamwork, social-skills, and any other to be achieved. The school does not have to pay extra fees to hire garbage collectors within school, so a lot of hard labour and money is saved. This activity only requires some time, effort and consideration from pupils belonging to the school.
