In his essay “Causes of Prejudice,” Vincent N. Parrillo states,
Blaming others for something that is not their fault is known as scapegoating [also called “blaming the victim”]. . . .There have been many instances throughout world history of minority groups serving as scapegoats. . . History is filled with examples of people who thought their maltreatment of others was just and necessary (Parrillo, Rereading America, 391, 387). The kind of scapegoating that Parrillo is talking about is when a dominant group treats a subordinate group poorly, because of their religious beliefs are against it, or they have been brought up to believe they are superior. When people have an ideology that they are superior and go to imperialize or colonize a certain area, the people that got colonized would not have a say on anything other than follow what they are being told or there is going to be consequences like being killed or being punished. It will be either they follow the rules or there is going to be consequences. An example of this is when white people were oppressing the blacks during slavery. Modern scapegoating
We can clearly see how in the early days during slavery the blacks were stereotyped, the whites used to perform Minstrel shows imitating and stereotyping black people of how uneducated, and all negative things they felt about them. In the media, they also portray most of the black people as violent; all this stereotyping would cause people to scapegoat the black community. This is because people are over generalizing the member of the community to what they are not, or even blaming them for things that others have done.
Scapegoats appear abundant in the world today. Political parties and businesses consistently seem to find a person or small group that takes the blame for serious issues. This can cause problems and arguments that sometimes lead to something serious like wars. Scapegoats are just a way of passing blame off of oneself and on to others, just so reputations can remain intact. This sort of attitude shows how lethargic the world has become, where people don’t even take responsibility for their actions. Many people from older generations complain about how all the new generations become too comatose and unwilling to take on their own actions and indiscretions. With attitudes like this, peace will never be found and will inevitably lead to conflict. Something must be done to stem the flow of scapegoats which have been utilized far too much over time.
Some of them could have even been used as scapegoats. Yet how does one become a scapegoat? Could someone out there have that much hatred and anger to blame one person for the faults of many? Is the need for blame significant? Does desire lead to hatred and evil?
I wonder why. Maybe because “scapegoating” speaks to the paranoia in all of us: the anti-immigrant or the anti-minority, the bigot or the conformist—the side of us that fear change because we have gotten too comfortable in our own little world. Maybe because it also speaks to our self-denial, to stick to such ideology that somebody else is responsible for our failure and misfortune, instead of facing our own individual responsibility and moral obligation. One of the most destructive forces that is destroying young black people in America today is the common cultures wicked image of what an realistic black person is supposed to look like and how that person is supposed to act. African Americans have been struggling for equality since the birth of this land, and the war is very strong. Have you ever been in a situation where you were stereotyped against?
In today’s society there are many stereotypes surrounding the black community, specifically young black males. Stereotypes are not always blatantly expressed; it tends to happen subconsciously. Being born as a black male puts a target on your back before you can even make an impact on the world. Majority of these negative stereotypes come from the media, which does not always portray black males in the best light. Around the country black males are stereotyped to be violent, mischievous, disrespectful, lazy and more. Black males are seen as a threat to people of different ethnicities whether it is in the business world, interactions with law enforcement or even being in the general public. The misperceptions of black males the make it extremely difficult for us to thrive and live in modern society. Ultimately, giving us an unfair advantage simply due to the color of our skin; something of which we have no control.
Also films, such as Boyz in the Hood and Menace II Society have become multi-million dollar success stories with criminal portrayals of young blacks. This portrayal, over time, has fostered false beliefs in white America regarding the way we perceive and view blacks. What the media refuse to acknowledge is that the vast majority of blacks are employed, attend school, and are not involved in gangs or other criminal activities. It is now quite common for young African-American males to be stopped and questioned by cops for any misfits. The profit motive behind continuing this stereotype is a fact. One can only conclude that Michael Reich's Segmentation Theory might be right. It is in the interest of the elite to use media to demean one class by using racial stereotype in order to maximize their profits.
Long before television and films were being produced, there were plays and different forms of entertainment where blacks were stereotyped. There is a lot of misrepresentation of the black society as a whole in the media. The reason that this is true is because the mostly white society accepts this and prolongs s this misrepresentation in the media. Toni Morrison and bell hooks share some of the same ideas on sexism, racism and conformity. This American society is made up of mostly whites. In conclusion this was a dark part in American history and a part that America would like to forget but the stereotypes are still there even today but people choose not to look or say anything about it. Today African Americans are portrayed as gang bangers and thugs who love white women. When you research into this you might be left with yourself thinking as to why do the television people put stereotypical and demeaning stuff like this on television and I guess it’s a question that will never be answered.

In the media,there is often two kinds of criminals: those with mental illness, and violent thugs.However, the distinction is based on the color of one’s skin and not the crimes they committed. The media influences criminal stereotypes against Blacks in many ways. News programs use racial slurs to discuss Black Americans; the movies constantly use the stereotypes of Black thugs, and social media reacts negatively towards the struggles of Black families. The case of Dylan Roof, Zimmerman,and Mike Brown are only a few cases of the media’s unfair portrayal of criminal stereotypes. The inequality seen in American history has impacted all American citizens in different ways. Through the years, the people living in America have seen the different measures variety of racist groups do to make certain people stay at the bottom of the hierarchy in American society. One group that targets African Americans is the Ku Klux Klan. They are better known as the KKK, who wear hooded white outfit covering their faces shielding their identities.
