Introduction Santa Catalina Island, often known as Catalina Island, is located off the coast of Southern California, southwest of Los Angeles. Catalina Island forms part of the Channel Islands archipelago. Catalina is the only island, out of eight, that has been significantly developed. There are two major settlement location within the island - the city of Avalon and the unincorporated town of Two Harbors (“Visit Catalina Island,” 2014). Beyond the town boundaries the island is covered by wild life that it is owned and operated by the Catalina Island Conservancy ("The Official Catalina Island Website,” 2013). Catalina is a unique place since it has developed infrastructure and have resources to exploit that enable people to live in it. This unique characteristic attracts many people every year to enjoy different ranges of activities. Tourism is the only industry that Catalina has to the economy to fluctuate (“Visit Catalina Island.” 2014). Since the only income for Catalina Island has historically been tourism, the market has been exploited to be able to sustain the towns and enable further development. Both of the towns depend on tourism to survive, however this does not mean that they are similar. According to 2010 Census of Bureau the approximate population of Catalina was 4,096. Avalon had a population of 3,569 and the rest of the population is, Two Harbors and the Catalina Island Conservancy (337.37 km2), 527 (U.S. Census, 2011; “Visit Catalina Island,” 2014). As it can be observe, the amount of resident from each town is significantly different, and the major concentration is in Avalon. Emerald Bay Catalina is an amazing place to visit whether it's for learning about marine biology or just to have fun participating in the amazing activities. Emerald Bay is located at the northern coast of Catalina Island, 22 miles of the coast of Los Angeles. Catalina also has a long and interesting history altogether. It was originally inhabited by Indians. Then Catalina underwent a long period of time being discovered by different explorers and being passed from owner to owner. Currently over 80% of of Catalina is owned by the Mountain Sea Adventure corporation whose goal is to preserve the wildlife, and educate youth about it. 2.1.3.2 Personal Realm While the influential realm encompasses all the elements of a tourist experience which are outside the individual, including the physical environment, the social environment and the tourism products and services, the personal realm embraces the elements within a person. This includes motivation and expectation, satisfaction/dissatisfaction, knowledge, memory, perception, self-identity, and emotions. 2.1.3.3 Motivation and Expectation Literature on tourist experience outlines the importance of both motivation and expectation in the overall evaluation of the experience of a destination. Although there are a number of variables shaping the tourist behaviour, motivation and expectation are often considered as the most critical ones as they constitute the driving force behind all behavioural actions of tourists towards a destination (Fodness, 1994). This is also reiterated by Garcia-Mas and Garcia-Mas (2005, as cited in Gisolf, 2014) pinpointing that “needs, motives and motivation are the engine of human conduct and play together with expectations a fundamental role in the mechanics of tourism”.
1.2 Problem Formulation In the problem formulation part of my report I would describe the overall situation of the U.K Tourism industry. The service concept of “Simply Travel” will give us information about the services provided by the company. I will find out about the customers, competitors of the company. I will find out what political, economical, social and technological factors affecting the company and its demand situation.
The destination image framework provided by Baloglu and McCleary consists of both cognitive/perceptual and affective evaluations that determine the destination image. Cognitive/perceptual evaluation means beliefs or knowledge of destination attributes whereas the affective evaluation means feelings or attachments towards the destination attributes. The framework shows that factors influencing the destination image are personal and subjective. According to Balogu and McClearly’s framework, the personal factors affecting destination image are psychological, which consists of tourism values, motivations and personality, and social factors including age, education, and marital status. The stimulus factors affecting destination image are the amount and type of information sources as well as the distribution of previous experiences.
