We read “metamorphosis” written by Kafka in class. We encounter Samsa, the main character, who woke up and found himself changed into a bug. Many consider the story to be slapstick but for me, I realized that the story is didactic. It illustrates that materialism is evident for families, wherein family members hurt each other just for money and loving our self is important also.

Money is seen as one of the most important thing people should have. Mr. Samsa, Gregor’s father, had a business misfortune five years ago and his son took over the family’s responsibilities and his debts. Kafka points out “Gregor had started to work with a special intensity and from a minor assistant had become, almost overnight, a travelling salesman, who naturally had entirely different possibilities for earning money and whose success at work were converted immediately into the form, of cash commissions, which could be set out on the table at home for his astonished and delighted family.” (Kafka) shows that Gregor provided for his family and lived a decent life, living without worries, wherein they even ...
