Salt Aire Foundation (SAF) is a non-profit 501c3 based in Utah, and dedicated to the preservation of education for all demographics including special needs, providing a unique emphasis on the Fine and Performing Arts.
SAF Mission Statement
The mission serves to elevate awareness, establish support, and offer educational opportunities and encouragement, thereby eliciting tremendous enthusiasm and momentum for the Arts and Humanities, while creating a positive impact in our communities.
SAF has organized six programs in keeping with our commitment:
1) The Utah Film School (UFS) is a forum for youth, adults alike, and offer’s courses in all areas of the entertainment industry. The instructor, students, and film school coordinator determines the projects based on the students individual skills and needs. Group and individual instruction, mentoring, development, and coaching are an integral part of UFS. Scholarships are in place for eligible applicants.
As in all the programs developed by the Salt Aire Foundation, diversity is an integral element. All ethnicities and age groups are encouraged to participate in all aspects of UFS.
2) SAF Educational Outreach/DVD Program is a project designed to provide keen insight into the genre of film production, by providing classes and hands on experience in a community that otherwise would not have such opportunities. Vicky Johnston (Board Member) Chair Utah Film School
Vicky Johnston is a member of the National Association of Professional Women and manages a successful Talent Agency and the Utah Film School. She has previous experience as a Casting Director and Producer and acting experience in feature films, TV short films, TV episodes, Modeling and Print advertising. Vicky has a strong background in business management, recruitment and event management along with owning and managing other successful businesses not related to the film industry. Vicky possesses a strong desire to empower others to be excellent at their craft through high quality education, professionalism and integrity.
Debra Rathwell is the Senior VP for AEG Live. Rathwell oversees the active New York office of AEG along with being a force in national touring. Rathwell has more than 30 years of experience in the industry and her dedication inspires me. I know she is well respected in the industry and I think it is impressive that she books on average 800 shows every year. Being a woman in the music industry is a big challenge, but Rathwell proves to me and the world that being hard working will help prove yourself. The first step that really started Rathwell’s career was during her last year at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. Rathwell was Harvey Glatt’s assistant and went on to work as Bass Clef Entertainment, which partnered on shows with Canada’s concert leaders. This introduced Rathwell to the industry and the rest was like a snowball effect, one job led to another. Lisa Cholodenko grew up in Los Angeles and she began her film careers working as an assistant editor; however, she then moved to New York and earned an MFA in screenwriting and direction at the Columbia University School of arts. At Columbia University School of Arts, Cholodenko filmed her first short movie Dinner Party. Besides being a director, Lisa Cholodenko also was a film professor at Columbia University, an advisor and is currently on the Board of Governs of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. It was surprising to be able to find out how active Cholodenko is in the film industry and in the university she attended. This portrays how committed Cholodenko is to creating successful movies and to be a part of others film victory.
The Heritage Foundation is a conservative research organization whose main purpose is to influence conservative public policies that are based on personal freedoms, limited government intervention, free enterprise and promotion of basic American values. Heritage Foundation is an influential organization that has promoted policies within the United States for many years. The foundation is funded through direct mail fundraising from donors. Much private and public cooperation have funded the organizations course for many years. Presidents of the United States have worked with the organization so as to promote their policies within the government. Heritage Foundation is highly regarded by the government because of its conservative nature to the public policies.

Often times people neglect the fact that the things- such as films- that they see and hear day to day can actually be worthwhile in teaching them. They come into contact with them purely for the purpose of being entertained and, sometimes, do not even realize that they are being taught valuable life lessons in the process. In conjunction with this theory, Professor Michael Taylor once said, “We don’t often think of the value of media beyond its entertainment, but there is a whole area that has to do with education through entertainment. As filmmakers, the work that we do has a huge impact on our culture. With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
The art of filmmaking has been around for over a hundred years and now has over a hundred different specialized jobs in its field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “key grip, gaffer, best boy, boom operator, and director of photography are just a few of the jobs in the field of filmmaking that are essential to the process of creating a movie or TV show” (From Script #1). But before any of these people are able to get a job, they must go through an average of four years of college in order to specialize in film (Zeke). Filmmaking is a very complex and involved career that is crucial to the pursuit of happiness on earth and the telling of history.

In this article, Jones discusses the marginalization of motion pictures, yet touches on the great aspects of film, and how these aspects can expect to survive in the future. Major topics that Jones addresses are: developments in video narrative through flawless storytelling, the use of digital tools for film restoration and preservation, and an audience shift from film to digital. These points detail the love and appreciation that goes into filmmaking, and how the narratives, despite having changed formats throughout the years, have been able to survive and appear to be timeless. Jones also further discusses the idea of using audiovisual material to create narratives appealing. He details how the stylistic approach of a film, and the techniques like cinematography and editing, can enhance and provide for a greater narrative. Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
The first time I heard the phrase “arts advocacy” was about three years ago. I had obviously heard the words “arts” and “advocacy” before, and certainly knew what those words meant, but I had never heard the words used together. At the time, I was performing in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) and my director told us about how important arts advocacy is and how badly it was lacking in the South. Now, of course, that is a generalization, however it rang true for Lubbock, Texas, and after moving to Norman, Oklahoma, I observed the same problem: there is a lack of arts advocacy in the Oklahoma community.
