Kathryn Schulz once said, “Our love of being right is the best understood as our fear of being wrong.” The main point of the author is to indicate that people always try to keep doing everything right to avoid thinking about being wrong. Someone thinks being wrong can cost their time and money, some time exposes them to danger others. Others believe that being wrong makes us feeling down. The author’s theory of being wrong is extremely useful because it sheds insight on the difficult problems of human nature. It is dangerous when people continuously trust too much in the feeling of being right.

Kathryn Schulz uses an example of a woman comes to a hospital for her leg surgery to prove how people believe too much in their right experience. In recent days, I have listened a lot of news about Syria war, and my first thought is the human’s perspectives. It is political and religious conflict turn into wars because each side involved believes that they are right, and the other is wrong. When they get over the mind that they are always right, it will open doors and eliminate conflicts. Schulz also showed when people stuck in the rightness, it likes they locked into a box of “I am right, how come everyone does not see the world the right way like I do.” It happened with my close friend as the reason of separation. She is older than her boyfriend, and she always thought that she is more mature than him. In every conflict conversation, she always pointed out that she was right and discredited him. She never listened to him, to his ideas and to his views. Until now, she still thinks that she is a perfectionist. Thinking you can achieve the American dream is a major key in doing so, and some Americans are already on the right track. In the U.S., a survey showed that 36 percent of Americans say they have achieved the dream, and another 46 percent believe they are on the path of achieving it. During “On Being Wrong” Schulz talks about how we learn about being wrong at a young age by having testes, quizzes, and grades on assignments. She talks about how when the other kids see your grades they immediately begin to judge you and think that you are less intelligent, lazy, or that you are irresponsible by not studying or not putting forth enough effort on your school work. That is where the negative connotation with being wrong is engraved into our minds, but being wrong is one of the best ways our society learns. In Kathryn Schulz’s essay, “Evidence”, the argument of the essay follows various situations brought up by Schulz, showing that people should take a positive approach to being wrong, and accept our error-prone nature, rather than obsessing with a perfect inadvertently-free ideal. Schulz ties together a lot of strong evidence, but fades back from a clear conclusion, steering the readers toward a relationship between error and the self. I am what my parents and friends define me as a “sandbagger”. I go into tests saying, “I am going to fail. I should change my major. My world is ending.” Then, I would come out of my test saying similar phrases. More often than not I receive my scores back to find that I had successfully prepared myself for the exam, and that I can continue on panicking for the next world ending test. Grant covered this phenomenon, which I was not aware was a phenomenon, towards the end of his book. Grant calls it “The Power of Negative Thinking”. Essentially there are two major ways to prepare for handling challenges. One, strategic optimism, is where an individual anticipates the best. The second, defensive pessimism, is the opposite, where an individual excepts the worst. I am without a doubt a defensive pessimist. Grant goes on to explain, that although the pessimist is usually more anxious and less confident, they preform just as well if not better than the optimist. After reading this section I felt relieved that I was not just irrational, but there was a method to my madness so to say, even though it does drive my parents and friends crazy. The relationship between certainty and doubt has been a heavily debated topic throughout history and especially in the mid-1800s. For most people, having some doubt on one’s opinions is much more beneficial than having absolute certainty because doubt allows one to review his potential choice and leaves room for him to make improvements on his choice. Someone who lives with absolute certainty cannot weigh the pros and cons because he has the confidence that what he believes is the right decision for everyone; however, there are situations in one’s life where absolute certainty is necessary, such as in team sports.
