Robert Havighurst was a phycologist who developed a theory demonstrating how people develop through life. He states that growth and development progress in stages with tasks to be accomplished at each stage. His developmental tasks provide a structure that evaluates an individual 's general and personal accomplishments. Within our shoe box, Havighurst’s age periods and developmental tasks theory is displayed through the movie tickets and that journal that was purchased. The movie tickets were bought to exhibit and serve as an activity to help find a congenial social group, a task within the young adult stage of Havighurst’s theory. The journal would allow for our gift receiver to write about any stimuli that is bothering her and then re-visit what was written later on and re-assess how she is now feeling with a new perspective, or more advanced cognitive outlook. The journal could facilitate accommodation by allowing the expression and reflection of thoughts into the journal which could lead to maturation of the cognitive processes. The end result of this maturation would be that the person can now solve problems that were unsolvable before. Lawrence Kohlberg was a theorist who mainly focused on the moral development of children and adults and focused on why individuals make the decisions they do. For the age and gender of our shoebox recipient we decided to focus on the third phase of Kohlberg’s 6 stage moral development theory. Lawrence Kohlberg states that school age through adult aged individuals and specifically Canadian women qualify for the interpersonal concordance orientation stage. Each stage consists of achievements that cannot be bypassed. Failure to reach these achievements, results in a damage to one’s ego. One may meet a developmental stage, recede and need to approach it again or one can become fixated at one stage and be unable to move forward. Erikson accentuates that one must be willing to adapt their behaviour in order to govern their lives. Within our shoebox, Erikson’s stages of development are demonstrated by condoms, movie tickets, and chocolates. A 19-40 year old woman relates to the Intimacy versus Isolation stage; represented by condoms, lotions and movie tickets.
