When people in America mention Russia and the Russian people, it usually does not come with a positive reaction or have any relation to positive feelings. During the 2016 presidential election in the United States, we had a candidate that was very anti-Russia and a candidate who was very much pro-Russia. Leaders have a great influence on how we view other Nations in relation to our own country. Our now President Elect Donald Trump has positive views on Russia that might begin to change the views of those that relate to Russia in a negative way. For example, during the presidential campaign Donald Trump was recorded encouraging Russia to hack into the privacy of American people. Many Americans did not appreciate the encouragement for Russia to hack into their lives. Some assumptions people make about Russians are that all Russians are Vodka drinking communists, or that all Russians are spies and are secretly planning the downfall of the American Government. Some people might also have negative views of Russia because of their current president Vladimir Putin. Vladimir Putin is seen as monster and even compared to Hitler, and is seen very negatively by the Western world. Russia is the largest country in the world contributing to “One-eight of the Earth’s land mass” (Willerton 2016). The Russian people have great appreciation for the people in their country. What people need to understand about Russia in 2016 is that the Russian people have a 92% approval rate of their President Vladimir Putin (Willerton 2016). Vladimir Putin has improved the economic state of Russia greatly raising the GDP of the country from $195 billion to $2.1 trillion from 1999 to 2013 (Willerton 2016). If a Russian family moved in next door in an American Suburb, it will definitely create opportunity for good Russian and American relationships to start up. This relates to self-disclosure because we are all human beings and tend to share similar situations. Not everyone in the world shares the same views I am aware of that, but I do not believe that Russians and Americans as friends or acquaintances will not relate or have tolerance and empathy for one another. The final tactic I have is to become involved in government. Becoming involved in government will allow for Americans to understand politics as well as to why certain policies work in government. This will enhance a person’s awareness to worldviews as well as world history. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink it.
