“Romeo and Juliet” has numerous meanings. All throughout the play, the author, William Shakespeare, is constantly trying to make us, the reader, realize something. One of the key themes in Romeo and Juliet is ‘hatred leads to violence and tragedy’. All throughout the play, the hatred members of the Montague family and members of the Capulet family demonstrate towards each other continually leads to hostility. All of these incidents show us this particular theme of the play.
In the very first scene in Act One, a fight breaks out in the town square between several of the workers from the Capulet family and the Montague family. Later in this skirmish, Tybalt and Benvolio join, all determined to win. After the outbreak begins to involve the townspeople and whoever else will join, the prince arrives and puts a stop to it. Although the Prince proclaims “If ever [Montagues and Capulets] disturb our streets again, [their] lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace” (Act One Scene 1 Line 96-97), vengeance will always be in the back of their minds.
Also in Act One, Tybalt yet again instiga...
Did you know that Romeo and Juliet was one of the biggest love story of all time. Romeo and Juliet is a story of two star-crossed lovers from two families the Capulets and the Montagues. The Capulets and the Montague had a big fight that made the families very angry at each other. Romeo and Juliet decide to get married. The two couple marry and run away. In the process both of them will die. When it comes to Romeo and Juliet who are the top three people that caused the two to die. The two people that are chosen are Friar Lawrence and Lady Capulet. Friar was chosen because he is the one that married Romeo and Juliet. Lady Capulet was chosen because she is forcing Juliet to marry Paris which is making Juliet want Romeo even more. The third thing
Romeo and Juliet is the tragic story of two young, “star-crossed” lovers from feuding families, destined for disaster. The Capulets and the Montagues have an ancient grudge on one another that has been passed down over generations. Unfortunately, Romeo and Juliet end up victims of their families’ vicious loathing. Romeo and Juliet’s story has several intertwining themes such as the aforementioned hatred between the Capulets and Montagues and the revenge Romeo strives for after his friend Mercutio’s death. Also, the love and passion between Romeo and Juliet and the loyalty of Romeo and his friends. Honour and revenge also feature frquently throughout the play including Juliet’s pressure to honour her family, and the revenge Romeo sees as his duty when Tybalt kills Mercutio.
In Act 1, Scene 1, another fight breaks out between the Capulets and the Montagues. It states in the Prologue: “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,” –Prologue, Line 3. What could this “ancient feud” between the Capulets and the Montagues be about? Shakespeare didn’t really specify what this ancient grudge is about, but I interpret that the grudge is something that gets many involved into violence. For example, could this feud have ended in Act 5, Scene 3, when Montague and Capulet shook hands? They talk of a promised golden statue that marks the end of their bitter feud, but these lines can be spoken in such a matter that it seems that Montague is trying to “outbid” Capulet, while Capulet responds by showing he is as wealthy as Montague. Perhaps the feud was financial; maybe who’s richer, or an ancient debt still unpaid. Who knows? This is just my own interpretation.
Ever heard that too much hate is a bad thing? Well in Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows how the hate we have can lead to unintentional consequences. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare illustrates how hate affects the way someone says or does something. From the very beginning of the story, Shakespeare tells us how much hate the two families have for each other. In the opening scene in Verona, the two servants of different families, the Montagues and Capulets, start a fight between each other.
William Shakespeare composed the tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the 16th century. This play vividly portrayed the banned love between the heirs of two families. Spoiler alert, Romeo and Juliet killed themselves in the end. Every person in Romeo and Juliet held responsibility for their death. Among all of the characters, Friar Lawrence and Capulet were major catalysts of the casualties. Let's not forget Romeo, the one that started it all.
In conclusion, the irony is that their love, and death, was able to do what their lives could not, to end the feuding between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. It is with this thought that I shall examine “the thin line between love and hate” which is evidently shown on many occasions, such as when Romeo uses his love for Juliet to remove his hate for Tybalt “Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage” and also the play itself is evident of this, Romeo and Juliet’s love was so strong for each other, that they were able to overcome hate and also the hate that others possessed towards each other.
Shakespeare’s play is about two families that hate each other for no obvious reason. This fight has dragged on for a long time in Verona, Italy where the play is set. In Verona there are public disturbances between the two families, Capulets and Montagues. It became such a problem that the prince announces “I have an interest in your hate’s proceeding, / My blood for your rude brawls doth lie a bleeding;” (Romeo and Juliet 3:1: 186-87). The families’ feud creates a creepy and dismal atmosphere in Verona, and this leads the Prince to promulgate the rule with both families. Public disturbances will not happen again and if it does then they will take any fighter’s lives in front of those both families. As the reader may notice, the Capulets and the Montagues’ hatred and indignation grew as the feuds escalated. At the Capulet’s party, Tybalt does not accept Romeo being a part of the party saying “I will not endure him” (Romeo and Juliet, 1: 5: 76) and convinces Capulet to drive Romeo out of the room. Although, Capulet accepts Romeo to enjoy the party, “He shall be endured./ What, goodman boy! I say he shall. Go to!”(Romeo and Juliet, 1: 5: 77-78). However, at the end of the play both families finally realize that they have done something wr...
A theme is a central idea that appears throughout a play, the themes also tie events of a play together and give the work meaning and purpose. To explore a play’s central theme, think about the message that the playwright wants to express. What is the significance of the play? Does it explore a moral issue? Can most people identify with it?
Many people think that society has changed so much over the years. That the way that children act, has taken a turn for the worst, but in reality children are learning from their ancestors. Children are lying to their parents, they are sneaking out at night to be with a boy that is “the one”, children are going back into the age of Shakespeare. In the play “Romeo and Juliet” which was written by William Shakespeare in 1597, there are two teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love with each other. These two teenagers try to do everything that they can to live the rest of their lives together, except their families despise each other, so there is no way that they can live the rest of their lives together. So, many people believe that the way that our children are growing up today is taking away the fun parts of their childhood. However in this play Juliet did many of the things that teenagers are trying to do now. Children and sometimes adults now need to realize how your actions not only affect you but also the people around you, you also need to think about the consequences of the actions you make. At first Juliet falls in love at first sight with Romeo, then she takes a potion, which causes her family to think she is dead, and then how Friar Lawrence helps Juliet with the scheming, which shows how adults have to think about others as well.
There was action and there was tragedy, but put it all together to make the perfect comedy and a perfect tragic story. William Shakespeare wrote the play Romeo and Juliet, said to be the finest written play in history, for its originality and it's many plots. This story will take you through a lot of mixed emotion and will show you what a true feud is. This story is laid out perfectly because of its true holding and both family's passion for their children. William Shakespeare wrote the story to show how Romeo and Juliet's love for each other will show their youth and immaturity. Their over reacting cost them their life. At such a young age they thought they could never love another being again, and so, " A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life."(Act one scene one)
Throughout Romeo and Juliet, love and hate are combined. However, even though they are combined, love still remains the principal theme in the play. Although in the play, the theme of hatred can be just as important and sometimes it intensifies the theme of love. For example, Romeo and Juliet’s love wouldn’t have been so extreme and powerful unless there was the hatred between the Montague’s and Capulet’s. We observe this from the very beginning of the prologue.
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, is set in Verona where two families, Montague and Capulet, have a long feud between them. This conflict causes a dilemma for the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet that are secretly married, and they take their lives to be together. Romeo, a Montague, is a teenage boy that in the beginning of the play, loves Rosaline and he is depressed because she doesn’t love him back. After talking to Mercutio, Romeo’s friend, he goes to a Capulet’s party and falls in love with the daughter of Lord Capulet, Juliet, and they secretly get married. Shakespeare shows throughout the play how the characters continue to forgive the ones they love, even in the harsh circumstances. Angered by the death of his good friend Mercutio, Romeo slays Tybalt. “This gentleman, the Prince’s near ally, /My friend, hath got this mortal hurt In my behalf-my reputation stained /With Tybalt’s slander-Tybalt, that an hour /Hath been my cousin.”(3, 1, 104-108). Juliet could have been very angry with Romeo since Tybalt was her cousin but she was more heartbroken over Romeo’s exile. Shakespeare displays that Juliet’s love for Romeo overpowered the hate she had for him killing Tybalt. In addition, Shakespeare displayed that love conquers hate through the relationship between Juliet and her father, Lord Capulet. Near the end of the play Capulet told Juliet that she had ...

Everyone is to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo, Juliet, Friar Laurence, and Romeo and Juliet’s parents all played their own role in causing the four deaths of Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt, and Paris. It is not just one of them to blame, every one of them did something to cause the tragedy. Some of them played a bigger role than others, but everyone contributed. Fate had nothing to do with it and it was all the different characters faults. Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Lawrence’s rash decisions where the main cause of the tragedy.
