Romeo and Juliet Essay

In Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy written by the great English playwright- William Shakespeare- “a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,” due to rivalry of two families (Crowther 1). Simply put, the hatred between two families causes a pair of lovers to commit suicide. Although this case is a suicide, the blame might not be all on the lovers- Romeo and Juliet. The tragedy might be the fault of other people involving in this event, specifically the adults around the lovers. There are three adults around the lovers that might have influenced them and lead them to their death: Friar Lawrence, the nurse, and the apothecary.
In the story, Romeo’s only trusted advisor is Friar Lawrence, the person who agrees to marry the lovers, leading to their death later on. At first, Romeo’s heart belongs to Rosaline, a relative of the Capulet family. Her rejection deeply saddens Romeo, though when he saw Juliet, his heart for Rosaline shifts towards her. Juliet of the Capulet family becomes the love interest of Romeo, as he is also one for her. This puppy love formed by the two lovers is a love at first sight, which is childish and might not last long, and Friar Lawrence knows this for a fact:
Holy Saint Francis, this is a drastic change! Have you given up so quickly on Rosaline, whom you loved so much? Then young men love with their eyes, not with their hearts. Jesus and Mary, how many tears did you cry for Rosaline? How many salty tear-drops did you waste salting a love you never tasted? The sun hasn’t yet melted away the fog you made with all your sighs. The groans you used to make are still ringing in my old ears. There’s still a stain on your cheek from an old tear that hasn’t been washed off yet. If you were ever...

Friar Lawrence, the nurse, the apothecary- these people should have the most blame for falsely influencing the decisions made by the lovers. A person influenced by bad thoughts should not fully take the blame for committing a crime; rather, these bad thoughts influencing him should also be blamed. Without these characters, Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t have died- they might actually be able to live peacefully with each other, away from their families. But without these characters, Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t be such a successful play, containing the essence of a tragedy, “for there never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo (Crowther 94).”

    Friar Lawrence takes the cake when talking about who is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet. The Friar's action of marrying Romeo and Juliet played a vital role in the outcome. Had this not occurred, Juliet would not be as free and loving towards Romeo. From the previous night, she adamantly stated they must marry in order for her to fully trust Romeo. If they never married, they would not be insanely in love because she would not be able to fully trust Romeo. Another mistake of Friar Lawrence was trusting Friar John to send a letter to debrief Romeo on the current situation. He never received the letter. Since Romeo did not read the letter, he believed his only love was dead and decided to embark on a suicide mission. Lawrence knew the immense importance of the letter and still decided against personally delivering the message. Giving the sleeping potion to Juliet was another mistake that lead to their death. Although it allowed her to avoid marrying Paris, Romeo thought his wife to be dead causing the suicide of himself and eventually of his partner. Actions of Friar Lawrence were for the benefit of the people, but ultimately they paved the road for their deaths.

    In the fair city of Verona, two rival families, the Montagues and Capulets were involved in a nasty family feud that goes back years before any of the members were born. Even the townspeople were involved in the dispute, because the families were always fighting in the streets and causing disturbances. They disrupted the streets of Verona and even Prince Escalus tried to break up the fighting. They were given a warning, by him that another public fight would result in death. While this was occurring, Romeo, (a Montague) the main character, was getting over his last love, Rosaline, and was very upset. Juliet of the Capulet household had just been introduced to a wealthy young man, Paris, whom her parents wished her to marry. Yet she did not love him. Romeo goes to a party in an effort to forget about Rosaline. At this party he met Juliet, and immediately fell in love with her. He later finds out that she is a Capulet, the rival family of the Montagues. He decides that he loves her anyway and they confess their love for each other during the very famous "balcony scene" in which they agreed to secretly marry the next day. Friar Lawrence agreed to marry them in an effort to end the feuding between the families. Unfortunately, the fighting gets worse and Mercutio (Montague) a good friend of Romeo ends up in a fight with Tybalt (Capulet), Juliet's cousin. Tybalt killed Mercutio, which caused Romeo to kill Tybalt in an angry rage. For this, Romeo is banished from Verona. At the same time, the Capulet's were planning Juliet's marriage to Paris. Juliet didn't want to marry this man so she arranges with Friar Lawrence to fake her own death with a sleeping potion that would make everyone think that she was dead. Friar Lawrence promised to send word to Romeo to meet her when the potion wears off and to rescue her to Mantua, where Romeo was currently staying. There they would live happily ever after. Unfortunately, Romeo didn't receive the message on time and upon hearing of her "death" went to Juliet's tomb where he drinks poison and dies. When Juliet's potion wears off, she wakes to find her lover's dead corpse. She then proceeds to stab herself with Romeo's dagger. The two families find the bodies and with their shared sorrow, finally make peace with each other.
