Romeo and Juliet: A Story of True Love One of Shakespeare’s greatest works is arguably the troublesome love story of Romeo and Juliet. It’s widely disputed on whether their love was true or the result of young teenagers’ impulse. However, Romeo and Juliet’s love was true and genuine, and can be proven throughout the events and story of Romeo and Juliet. It’s proven when Shakespeare writes that Romeo and Juliet are ‘star-crossed lovers’, can be proven through the genuine acts of true love between the pair, and how easily their relationship blossomed and overcame the difficulties of the story. Primarily, according to Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet were a pair of star-cross’d lovers who took their lives (1.Prologue.6). This proves Romeo and Juliet’s love was true as the term ‘star-crossed lovers’ refers to lovers who are destined to be together, yet cannot due to outside forces dooming their relationship. Therefore, Shakespeare himself wrote that Romeo and Juliet were destined to be together, meaning that their love was true, written in the stars and was supposed to take place at some point in their lifetime. Even though Romeo and Juliet found each other at such a young age, does not disprove nor eliminate the fact that they are destined to be together, or that their love was not real. Secondly, Romeo and Juliet’s true love can also be proven through their genuine acts of true love. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night! (1.5.52-53). Shakespeare conveys Romeo’s feelings evidently when he writes that Romeo has never felt true love nor seen true beauty until he laid his eyes on Juliet. This strongly proves Romeo and Juliet’s ability to overcome the difficulties of their relationship, as even though Romeo is banished from Verona, their need to be together powers through and proves their true love. Romeo and Juliet’s love, even though widely argued as teenage impulse is rather a story of true love, as Shakespeare states they are ‘star-crossed lovers’, can be proven through their genuine acts of true love throughout the plot, and how easy their relationship blossomed and overcame the difficulties of the story. True love is a puzzling concept that many have different ideas of, which can sometimes interfere with another’s idea of true love simply because we do not understand or prevent ourselves from understanding. However, just because you cannot understand another’s idea of true love, does not make it any less true.
