Romeo, A Tragic Hero
Hamnet and his indecisiveness and obsession, Jay Gatsby dying chasing a dream that will never come true, and Severus Snape and his undying love for Lily. These are examples of tragic heroes in popular literature. Romeo Montague, from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, proves to be a true tragic hero according to Aristotle’s ideas of the character not being perfect and being relatable to many people today, the hero’s downfall is partially his/her fault, and that the characters fall is not a pure loss (Allinsby).
Although a part of a noble family, Romeo is not at all perfect. When the prince comes to investigate he urges the Montagues and Capulets to really assess the situation and ask themselves is it worth it to have bloodshed from both families and the royal family over a family feud (Allan page 1144-1145, lines 296-310). Capulet and Montague decide it is not worth it and decide to end their hatred towards each other. Although it took the loss of many lives to come to this conclusion at least in future generations of the families the hatred will be dead and they will be able to become friends. After the resolve made between the two households, Montague says that he will build a golden statue commemorating both Romeo and Juliet (Allen page 1144-45). This is the golden moment in the play because now the two families are accepting each other. The fact that Montague is actually building a statue to remember Juliet says a lot; he has welcomed her into his family and does not resent her or Capulet for marrying Romeo. The resolution of the play ended with teaching that love can overcome
