From 500 AD to 500 B.C, during the classical era, Rome and Greece, developed and settled along the Mediterranean Sea. Within these 1000 years, both Rome and Greece went through multiple transitions of power and struggled to maintaining peace. America learned from Greece and Rome’s mistakes and evolved into a more successful version of the two civilizations. The two civilizations did not only teach United States, but they also influenced American culture and infrastructure. Although Greece contributed to many elements of modern day America, Rome had a larger influence on America through the use of democracy, economy, and advancement in culture.

One of these actions included the use of trade routes in Greece. Since Greece did not consist of fertile land and soil, trading with Phoenicia and other civilizations became a way for the country to obtain important resources they did not have in order for them to thrive (9). America also exchanges goods.They do this by importing and exporting them to and from other countries to also be able to acquire goods that cannot be found in the United States. In addition, Rome also possessed a complex network of roads. The roads in ancient Rome allowed for people to travel from naval base to naval base and transport legions (11). Likewise to Rome, the United States uses roads and highways to travel farther distances more efficiently. Also, America has figured out ways to transport their army, navy, and military to other countries more quickly than ancient Rome was able to. Moreover, the Romans had currency in the form of coins (7). Since the Greeks used coins, they inspired Rome to also use a form of coinage and this allowed Greece, Rome, and other countries along the Mediterranean Sea to exchange resources within one another’s empires. The Ancient Greeks were the first to put the power of a nation in the hands of the average citizen, they created the idea of the democratic government, practiced as a direct democracy. Voting, political assembly, and official citizenship are all concepts that can be traced back to Classical Grecian ideas .The Romans developed the concept of the representative democracy .This was best exemplified by the Roman Senate. The upper house of the US Congress is the Senate in ode to this ancient ideal. Although American Democracy is defined as a Representative Democracy, that is to say citizens elect those who make decisions, they owe a great deal to Greek ideas and concepts.
During the age of Pericles, the ideal form of government was believed to be a government formed by all of the citizens regardless of wealth or social standing. This was known as democracy, literally meaning “ government of the people” [Document 3.] This government favored the many instead of the few. Athens was a direct democracy, meaning every citizen participated in debates. Western civilization used this philosophy of government by many, and created an indirect democracy where citizens elect officials to make and enforce laws.
The Romans called their political system not democracy but republic. Republic is something that belongs to the people. In Rome the right to take part in the governing belonged only to the men and those who had the statute of being citizens. The differences of republic and democracy are because of the origin of the two terms Greek and Latin language. The ancient Greeks discarded the tyranny as well as the disorder. Plato as well as Aristotle stabilized the complete democracy which was not based on the laws, with the power of the crowd and considered it as a form of ruling based on the jealousy and sweet talk of demagogues. Both of them considered the democracy to be wrong kind of state governing. Plato considers the democracy as nice and various public orders but without the necessary governing. The Romans adoption of the Greek culture allowed for them to improve upon their own beliefs and make the Greek culture more profitable for the Roman Empire. This cultural exchange, then helped the Romans advance in their community to become one of the greatest empires of that time. We know the Romans for their beautiful art, their outstanding architecture, even for their form of government but none of this would have happened if it wasn’t for the adaptation of the Greek culture, because their art and their architecture was an establishment from the Greeks that the Romans took. If it wasn’t for the Romans taking up the culture from the Greeks then there would not have been a possibility for the Roman Empire to have even expand and spread to the point where other cultures would have also adopted to the customs of the Romans, or make the Roman empire well known. Because of this, Romans were now open to new ideas that expanded their way of thinking and allowed their empire to expand with great power. Recently, 7th graders have been learning about Ancient Rome. You may not know, but Modern U.S and Ancient Rome have several similarities and differences. From history, Modern U.S has learned the mistakes made and has avoided them for no fall. Because Modern U.S and Ancient Rome have many similarities and differences, the lessons from Ancient Rome could help the U.S to avoid the fall and collapse that rome experienced.
